(1 Customer Review)
Shirley Horn chose to leave her jazz career during a good part of the '60s and '70s to raise her family, returning to record an album for Steeplechase in 1978. But 1981 marked a significant increase in her output, recording over several days at the Northsea Jazz Festival and producing two CDs from these performances, some of which are heard on All Night Long. Backed by electric bassist Charles Ables (who would remain with her until his death in 2001) and drummer Billy Hart, Horn captivates her audience with her intimate piano playing and understated yet infectious vocals. She works slowly into sparse arrangements of "Someone Like That in Your Life" and "Good for Nothing Joe," hushing the crowd. She makes the most of the bluesy, whimsical "Git Rid of Monday," an overlooked gem by Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke. Of course, there are plenty of delightful performances of standards like "If I Had You" and "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," in addition to thoughtful interpretations of a pair of bossa novas by Antonio Carlos Jobim. ~ Ken Dryden Shirley Horn All Night Long Songs | 1. | You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To | |

All Night Long
$10.15 Director Tim Blake Nelson sets Shakespeare's OTHELLO in a modern day private high school and the result is a dark, somber teen tragedy. Mekhi Phifer (CLOCKERS) stars as Odin James, an African American star basketball player at the otherwise all-white school. The coach of the team (Martin Sheen) loves Odin like a son, which causes real son Hugo (Josh Hartnett) to squirm with jealousy and plan an elaborate revenge. Julia Stiles (a modern dress Shakespeare regular, having also co-starred in HAMLET and TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU) is Desi, the virginal daughter of the dean, with whom Odin is in love. The ensuing outburst of tragic teen violence is ...

All Night Long
$11.49 Personnel: Shirley Horn (vocals, piano); Charles Ables (bass instrument); Steve "Syco Steve" Williams (drums); Steve Williams (drum). Liner Note Author: Dan Ouellette. Recording information: Monterey Jazz Festival (09/18/1994). Authors: Tim "T-Bone" Jackson; Jason Olaine. Photographer: Andy Nozaka. Jazz singer and pianist Shirley Horn achieved a measure of fame and success later in her career, but it was well-deserved, as this LIVE disc attests. Horn's voice had a slightly husky, dusky, seen-it-all quality, and her piano playing is succinct, gently surging, and blues-hued. Backed only by a bassist and drummer, Horn holds the audience in the palm of her hand with her intimate renditions of a healthy variety of material, as she beautifully reconstructs songs by Burt Bacharach and Leon Russell, along with some choice standards and rare gems. Shirley Horn's sole appearance at the Monterey Jazz Festival took place in 1994 and it is one of her most compelling performances of her career. The often raucous Monterey audience is captivated by her infectious vocals and swinging piano, accompanied by her long time bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Williams. Horn's vocal phrasing is devoid of the gimmickry, focusing on bringing the lyrics to life, including a mix of standards, ballads, and modern pop. Horn's mastery of ballads includes her dramatic ...

$17.09 "American Gypsy" was nominated "Album of the Year" in the Atlas American Independent Music Awards! - an amazing feat for an eclectic instrumental CD...World Discoveries Online ReviewD.C. Donovan, Editor:Nominated 'Album of the Year' by the American Independent Music Awards, Neil Jacobs' AMERICAN GYPSY is deserving of every honor it receives: the Eastern European gypsy tradition is deftly captured, along with overtones of jazz and even flamenco. Roma and folk traditions are presented in Neil Jacobs' own guitar styling compositions, supported on many pieces with the Ukrainian violinist Arkadiy Gips. AMERICAN GYPSY, unlike many traditional peasant productions, is apt to reach a wider audience than most: its flamenco styles will draw listeners of Spanish music, its classical precision will appeal to classical musicians, and its gypsy roots will attract Eastern European listeners who will find the blends surprising and refreshing. From flamenco to Hungarian gypsy cafe to near-Klezmer beats, AMERICAN GYPSY provides a host of ethnic-rooted, rollicking guitar songs. An outstanding production."Virtuosity is alive and well, and the evidence is in the record, "American Gypsy is barely short of amazing, casting out original and traditional songs based on or borrowed from the Gypsy music traditions of Eastern Europe and the Balkan States. A must-hear!" - "One of the Year's Ten Best!" "Adam Garrett - Columbus AliveAward-winning performer and composer, Neil Jacobs, has been professional touring musician for more than 25 years. Touring extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe, he has been featured throughout international festivals and concerts in Spain, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, and Russia. He has served served with UNESCO's Balkan Youth Reclamation Program in Bulgaria, received grants to study with the Gypsies of Spain, as well as performing in refugee camps and orphanages in the Balkans. All in all, it has been a colorful musical career. Neil has been featured at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, the Palace of Culture in Seville, Spain, The Kremlin, The World Youth Festival in Moscow, US, German and Russian TV. His original compositions have been inspired by Roma (Gypsy), Eastern European Folk, Jazz, Ambient and Classical musics. Considered a "magic mathematician" on the 12-string guitar, Neil also plays a host of other stringed instruments. Some other review excerpts:"Neil recorded "American Gypsy" with frightening naturalness and effortlessness. The intricacies of rhythm and meter are performed with unforced precision. Jacobs' 12-string guitar, Gips' violin and Douglas' bass blend as though they were made for each other."The Columbus Alive"...Sobbing melodies and fiery rhythms"Wilma Salisbury - Cleveland Plain Dealer"Unimaginable richness thrown to the winds with complete abandonment - echoes of other musics both modern and ancient" Jazz Lover's ...
