Doug Raney, still just 29 at the time of what was his ninth recording as a leader, is heard in an intimate pianoless trio with bassist Mads Vinding and drummer Billy Hart. Raney's cool-toned style looks back toward his father, Jimmy Raney, but he also displays his own musical personality. He had been touring with Chet Baker in a trumpet-guitar-bass trio at the time, so this music is somewhat in that sparse style, with Raney sounding both lyrical and swinging on such numbers as "I Thought About Her," "Laura," "My Old Flame," and the Charlie Parker blues "Perhaps." This album gives one an excellent sampling of Doug Raney's talents. ~ Scott Yanow

Davis spent the most groundbreaking years of his career on Columbia; volume eight of that label's "This Is Jazz" series offers a survey, however inherently limited, of his work from 1955 to 1965, a period that covers his two classic quintets, the recording of KIND OF BLUE and his first work with Gil Evans. What THE BEST OF MILES DAVIS includes is material from BIRTH OF THE COOL, represented by three cuts from that LP, and from sessions done between 1952 and 1954 that featured musicians like J.J. Johnson, Jackie McLean, Jimmy Heath, Percy Heath and Art Blakey. It's an interesting period, in that neither Blue Note nor Davis had quite developed into the icons they were about to become. Ironically, with the final two cuts on this collection (from 1959's SOMETHING ELSE), both the label and Miles can be heard doing precisely ...

$15.65 After a long and storied stint with Atlantic Records, the Drifters -- or at least the incarnation now led by singer Johnny Moore and "authorized" by the estate of longtime manager George Treadwell -- relocated to London, signed to Bell and recorded under the auspices of the songwriters/producers Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway the two LPs that comprise this 7T's label CD two-fer. As its title promises, The Drifters Now updates the venerable harmony group's sound for the post-funk era, virtually severing all ties to their illustrious past and signature approach. In the process, the Drifters effectively dropped off the map at home, but overseas the gambit worked brilliantly, with the single "Come on Over to My Place" reaching the U.K. Top Ten. Cook and Greenaway's production couches the group in a series of lush, velvety moods that update but never overwhelm their harmonies, still the selling point of any record with the Drifters brand above the title, but by this point it is a brand more than anything else, and for all the splendor of the vocals, passion and intensity are sorely lacking. Love Games further updates and refines the Drifters' identity for an era dominated by funk, Philly soul and disco; at best, its buttery harmonies fuse seamlessly with the plush production, and at worst, the group sounds as if they just awoke from suspended animation, confronted by a musical world that's frightening and confusing. It doesn't help that Cook and Greenaway's songs are rather uninspired, rehashing the era's clichés at the expense of new ideas or heartfelt sentiments. Just because this Drifters lineup is authorized doesn't mean it's the real thing. ~ Jason Ankeny
