Reflections Of Monk album
$88.05 The most well known, beloved, and bestselling jazz album of all time celebrates its 50th anniversary with a lavishly packaged collector's edition. It's widely agreed that Miles Davis reached a paragon of expression with KIND OF BLUE, and that the recording, which includes historic performances by Bill Evans, John Coltrane, and Cannonball Adderley, captures the essence of modern jazz. The 50TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTOR'S EDITION comes in a gatefold folder that holds an LP pressed on blue vinyl, a CD of the album that includes previously unreleased tracks, a bonus DVD, a hardback book, a memorabilia envelope, and a fold-out poster. The package is a must for Miles fanatics and marks the historical and musical importance of KIND OF BLUE in the manner it deserves.
With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating ...
| | Don Cherry Symphony For Improvisers CD (1966) Remastered
Reflections Of Monk CD music
$8.45 Whether essaying his skittering, free-form variations on cornet, trumpet or pocket trumpet, the endlessly melodic creations of Don Cherry were a triumph of imagination over technique. Cherry was one of the most recognizable improvisers in all of jazz, who overcame his lack of virtuoso chops with melodic and harmonic resourcefulness, terrific swing and a childlike delight in the joy of a toy. There is a playfulness and a sense of discovery to his music--particularly his three masterful sessions for Blue Note--that mitigates the emotional gravity and rhythmic turbulence of his creations.
Often overshadowed by his legendary collaborators, it remains no coincidence that on the greatest recordings by such stalwart innovators as Ornette Coleman, John ...
| | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
Reflections Of Monk music CDs
$13.69 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant ...
| | Jeff Hamilton Symbiosis CD (2009)
Reflections Of Monk songs
$12.59 Jeff Hamilton's recordings have always been focused as straight-ahead and mainstream as your typical superhighway, with occasional time for rest stops, gassing up, and sleepovers. While always a good listen, Hamilton and his non-stop rotation of up-and-coming pianists and bassists never really pushed the envelope, staying the course set by his mentor, the late, great bassist Ray Brown, and other California-based coolsters. With Symbiosis, though, there's a change in the weather with the addition of extraordinary young talent in pianist Tamir Hendelman and bassist Christoph Luty. This is not at all to say that Hamilton's music had no fire, guts, or glory, but the difference in internal energy heard on this recording is noticeable. Hamilton is also playing brushes for the most part, instead of sticks, and he proves the finest exponent of that style of jazz performance since Ed Thigpen. There's some truly extraordinary playing going on here, evident right off the bat on a two-fisted, ...
| | Houston Person Mellow CD (2009)
Reflections Of Monk album
$13.59 Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but is not as vocally pronounced or vibrato-driven. The quite capable pianist John Di Martino is the one whose more enunciated notions are harnessed, while tasteful guitar by the underrated James Chirillo rings out in acceptance of Person's embraceable hues. In a program of standards and two blues jams, Person rounds into shape this quintet of true professionals to render themes that are harder to play slow than fast. The slower ...

| | Miroslav Vitous Infinite Search CD (1969)
Reflections Of Monk songs
$9.79 With John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and Jack DeJohnette, this group rivaled the best fusion bands of the day. It must have been an intimidating challenge for a young Czech bassist to lead such a group on his debut album as a frontman, especially since he composed five of the six tracks. Recorded a year after the historic Bitches Brew and the year before Vitous began a stint with the innovative Weather Report, this was trend-setting fusion. It's produced by Herbie Mann, ...
