On his third CD, vibraphonist Joe Locke leads a solid quartet which includes pianist Kenny Werner, bassist Ron McClure, and drummer Ronnie Burrage. Locke's virtuosity on his instrument is demonstrated throughout the date. The opening medley begins with a solo by the leader of "Masada" (an introspective piece written by a friend of his, saxophonist Danny Wilensky) and the rhythm section joins him as he segues into a brisk take of the waltz "Summernight." Tenor saxophonist Larry Schneider is added on several tracks, including a dark but swinging take of "All of You" and a turbocharged run through "You Say You Care." Locke also wrote several originals, including the unpredictable "Smoke and Mirrors," which was originally written as an introduction to Miles Davis' "Nardis," and a brief duet with Werner, "Heart of Nowhere." This 1990 release was an early indicator of Joe Locke's arrival on the jazz scene, which was followed by many additional strong studio sessions as the 20th century drew to a close. Post-bop fans should consider this CD an essential acquisition. ~ Ken Dryden

Personnel: Joe Locke (vibraphone); Larry Schneider (alto & tenor saxophones); Kenny Werner (piano); Ron McClure (bass); Ronnie Burrage (drums).

At His Very Best
Leo Sayer At His Very Best CD  (2006) (Import)

Present Tense album
CD $28.89  Definitive Album
If there ever were a good reason for updating an artist's greatest-hits compilation, Leo Sayer's At His Very Best was it. After all, the most uncool of 1970s icons had long vacated the charts, with most of his hits concentrated into a period 1974-1982, and then even he had made way for the new romantics, the jazz-funk soul boys, and the androgynous stars of the early '80s. The man with the highest falsetto voice in the charts was no longer wanted, and all he had to offer in the mid-'80s was a series of insipid cover versions like "Till You Come Back to Me" and "Unchained Melody" (yes, yet another version). He'd also released several compilations of the hits, first in 1979 when he spent three weeks at number one with The Very Best of Leo Sayer, and then during the CD era he released All the Best and The Definitive Hits Collection. Then, out of nowhere, a British DJ and producer by the name of Meck (real name Craig Dimech) remixed one of Sayer's lesser hits, "Thunder in My Heart," and took it all the way to number one in the singles chart in February 2006. Suddenly, Leo Sayer was cool again, appearing on Celebrity Big Brother -- and the generation who had forgotten the curly-haired lovable singer, apart from oldie play of his biggest hits on radio, surprisingly found ...
Songs From The Saddle
Frank Stallone Songs From The Saddle CD  (2006)

Present Tense CD music
CD $14.79
Grammy and Golden Globe nominated artist Frank Stallone has been everything from a street singer, to a rock singer, to a big band singer. Who has composed & published more than 200 of his own songs. At a young age, the Maryland-born native pursued his musical ambitions, forming a series of bands in high school, and turning professional at age15, performing in clubs, and at times, would open for national recording artists that came through town. Frank's longest-lasting band, Valentine, included John Oates, of Hall & Oates. Frank eventually landed in New York, where he performed on street corners and made the rounds, performing in coffee houses in Greenwich Village to make ends meet.“Some nights it was so cold, that my guitar strings froze, and my fingers wouldn't move. All I owned was the guitar on my back, and a duffle bag for my clothes. If I was lucky, I made five dollars a night. Frank recalls, “One night I was standing on Third Avenue playing my guitar, when this big Irish policeman came strolling by, and stopped to listen to singing and playing . When I was done, he politely handed me a ticket for disturbing the peace, while at the same time telling me how much he liked my voice. I wish I still had that ticket,” continues Frank.Frank's musical ambitions were paralleled by his brother, Sylvester’s acting ambitions, who at the time was performing in off-Broadway shows when he had the chance. The two decided to join forces and became ushers at the little Carnegie Theater, in which, they were unceremoniously asked to leave, because their hair was to long and they were wearing improper attire, namely painted cowboy boots with their tuxedos - those being the only shoes they had.It was when Sylvester moved to California to begin a film career, that the two brothers' worlds really came together again, affording Frank his first big break into the mainstream. Sylvester's low-budget film, that happened to transform into one of the most successful and enduring movies in motion picture history, needed a group of street corner singers - that movie was “Rocky.” His a-capella, self-penned song, Take You Back, resulted in becoming one of the film's most unforgettable street corner scenes. Frank finally decided to move to California . It was there, that he coincidentally moved next door to his musical idol, the legendary Harry Nilsson. “I not only got to meet Harry, but we got to record together,” smiles Frank. A dream came true for Frank when the duo collaborated on the Joni Mitchell classic, ...
