This is one of a series of excellent trio dates made by pianist George Cables for Steeplechase during his tenure with the Danish label. Joined by bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Billy Drummond, Cables offers a mix of familiar standards and jazz compositions, along with his own tasty originals. His dreamy rendition of "Easy Living" is spacious, with understated bass and careful brushwork, while he romps through a playful setting of "(There Is No) Greater Love" and begins "Come Rain or Come Shine" with an inventive out-of-tempo solo. The fiery, percussive take of Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia" and infectious interpretation of Randy Weston's "Hi-Fly" also stand out. Cables' originals are just as potent, as demonstrated in the hip Caribbean flavor of "Voodoo Lady" and the constantly shifting "Ebony Moonbeams," with a recurring Latin rhythm. ~ Ken Dryden George Cables Bluesology Songs | 1. | In Your Own Sweet Way | |

Bluesology songs
$17.19 Bassist Curtis Counce led one of the top hard bop groups to be based on the West Coast during the mid-'50s, a quintet with trumpeter Jack Sheldon, tenor saxophonist Harold Land (shortly after he left the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet), pianist Carl Perkins and drummer Frank Butler. Nearly all of that group's recordings are on this two-CD set. Reissued are the contents of the Contemporary LPs Landslide, You Get More Bounce with Curtis Counce and Carl's Blues except for three alternate takes and three selections with pianist Elmo Hope that were issued years after the original LPs. | | Roger Kellaway Live At The Jazz Standard CDs (2008) Digipak
Bluesology CD music
$14.45 Many jazz pianists are truly brilliant, and of that there is no doubt. Where Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, and Chick Corea are usually mentioned first, dozens of other extraordinary players are not mentioned simply because of their name recognition. Roger Kellaway is such a figure, clearly a talented, highly skilled, and universally accessible player whose heightened melodic sense and chops galore easily put him in the class of a musician's musician. A double-CD set live in New York City at the Jazz Standard, this effort should leave no doubt as to Kellaway's worthiness belonging in the upper echelon of mainstream jazz masters. But it would be inaccurate to peg Kellaway a conservative player simply because he is interpreting well-known standards. True, ...
| | Paul Dunmall Bebop Starburst CD (1999)
Bluesology music CDs
$14.49 Saxophone player Paul Dunmall is mostly known for his work with the free jazz quartet Mujician. But since 1997 he has been leading his own octet. Bebop Starburst is this band's second CD. The octet is formed of the four members of Mujician (Dunmall, Tony Levin on drums, Paul Rogers on bass, Keith Tippett on piano), plus Simon Picard on tenor sax, Annie Whitehead and Chris Bridges on trombones and Gethin Liddington on trumpet.
An impressive brass section like this (two saxes, two trombones, one trumpet) was screaming for a 1940s jazz-oriented music. Incidentally, this record offers free jazz flirting with bebop and swing. Did the American swing revival of the mid-'90s (thanks to the Squirrel Nut Zippers, the Brian Setzer Orchestra et al) gained the avant-garde scene? One thing sure, Cuneiform Records simultaneously released two CDs in this vein (the other one being Motor Totemist Guild's City of Mirrors). On Bebop Starburst, the listener is treated with a five-part program. Part one, is the argument exposed in 50 seconds. It instantly sets the pace of this CD with a burst of brass and a running bebop rhythm. Part two (seven minutes) picks up on the first statement and maintains the pace only to find a calmer mood in the end. Part three (20 minutes) opens on a prepared piano solo by Keith Tippett, soon joined by his three Mujician acolytes. If it weren't for the occasional ...

Intelligent and imaginative, highly atmospheric, steeped in mist and melancholy, but most of all, full of driving dance music “The Beat Syndicate” is the group's masterpiece. After three albums of gothic-industrial madness, NEXUS returns with an album that shines so brightly and colourfully – a true kick in the balls for clubland snobs.NEXUS is a project run by singer/keyboard player Mike Pougounas, the drummer/computer guru Jim Stevis, and the bass and guitar player Costas Spanos. While recording the album in the studio in Athens, the band picked the title “The Beat Syndicate” because of the driving compositions mixed with dark bass-lines which formed and directed the melodies. Behind the dancy beat that teeters on gothic's edge, Mike's vocals are deep and dark. With the 100% club hit titled “Drop The Luv Bomb”, NEXUS spins off heart-stopping tracks such as “You Always Get A Second Chance” and the fleshier arrangements of “Saviours Own Slump”.Once again, they have opted to give it electronified gothic with wit, wild statements, and stormy guitars with the track “Addicted To Ya”. “High Heels On Wheels” unveils the band as a spiked synthetic pop unit of considerable merit that can jump from the sublime elegance of the minimalistic “Happiness Is A Lonely Place” to the ala-Nine Inch Nails industrial sounds of “TV-Whoring”.Long raincoats and perfect, pioneering beats always go together when you listen to this album and ...
