Of the many recordings Duke Jordan did for the Steeplechase label while living in Copenhagen as an expatriate, he did two with bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Billy Hart, and they are both included on this double-CD set. Those recordings As Time Goes By and Time on My Hands yield this reissue of 26 selections, which are changed and mixed-up from the original track listings to offer a variance between interpretations of standards and originals written by the leader. Interestingly enough, the 11 sides from 1979 have the trio almost exclusively doing Jordan originals, while the sessions from six years later in 1985 have the same trio doing American Popular Song interpretations. The time gap in between makes one curious about the why's and wherefore's. Also, the 1985 sessions were initially on LP but not CD, making this release somewhat rare. The musicianship, of course, is first rate, as you clearly hear Jordan's sensitive, thoughtful, lyrical, and witty style buoyed by the chattering bass playing of Lundgaard and the snap-crackle drumming of the always masterful Hart. This effort comes recommended to those discovering Jordan, which if you haven't, you shouldn't waste more precious time finding out about this great jazz pianist. ~ Michael G. Nastos
Originally released as two separate albums.

When You're Smiling album
$14.80 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann in ballad mode, but its arrangements never call attention to themselves, the way that some Jon O'Brien productions do. Instead, the focus is always on Jones' voice and songs, which are once again all originals, sometimes composed in conjunction with collaborators including her longtime colleagues Jesse Harris, Ryan Adams, and Will ...
| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
When You're Smiling CD music
$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner vocals will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes on "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Some Enchanted Evening." Similarly engaging are his renditions of such rock-oriented tunes as Elton John's "Your Song," his low-key version of Don ...
| | Harry Connick, Jr What A Night! A Christmas Album CD (2008)
When You're Smiling music CDs
$10.99 With his silken, suave, self-assured vocals recalling a cross between Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr. has a natural voice for celebrating Christmastime. So it's no surprise that with the 2008 holiday season in full swing, Connick returns with his third holiday record, the sprightly WHAT A NIGHT! A CHRISTMAS ALBUM. As it is with his non-Yuletide LPs, WHAT A NIGHT! is a medley of his nimble, elegant takes on time-tested classics and ...

| | Best Of Ella Firzgerald And Louis Armstrong On Verve CD (1997)
When You're Smiling album
$6.55 Principally recorded at Capitol Studios, The Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood, California from August 15, 1956 - August 28, 1957. Includes liner notes by William Ruhlmann.
From August 1956 to August 1957, legendary jazz producer Norman Granz oversaw several recording sessions and a handful of concerts at the Hollywood Bowl starring two of the finest singers in jazz history, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Fitzgerald was at the peak of her powers at the time, having clearly defined herself as the best female singer in jazz. Armstrong was comfortably settling into his Grand Old Man of Jazz role by this point, trading hot swing and fiery trumpet solos for genial, good-humored vocalizing.
Still, Armstrong was never ...
