The fine swing singer Daryl Sherman pays tribute to composer Jimmy McHugh on this CD by performing 14 of his tunes, ranging from big hits to obscurities. Sherman sounds perfectly at home on such songs as "I've My Fingers Crossed," "South American Way" (introduced by Carmen Miranda), "I'm Livin' In a Great Big Way," "Doin' the New Lowdown" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street" among others. She is assisted on various songs by pianist Dave McKenna (otherwise Sherman is on piano), the reeds (clarinet, tenor and alto) of Ken Peplowski, veteran tenorman Eddie Barefield (on one of his final recordings), guitarist John Pizzarelli and bassist Jay Leonhart. The latter two occasionally join in with Sherman on vocal duets. Overall, this is an excellent tribute with plenty of subtle surprises. ~ Scott Yanow

I've Got My Fingers Crossed: A Celebration Of...
$13.39 Trombonists Carl Fontana and Allen Hermann join forces for a brilliant two-horn session in 2001, which turned out to be one of Fontana's last dates prior to his death in 2003. Although they had played together on a number of occasions, this is evidently the first time both men appeared on the same release. Fontana was an established veteran of many decades, while Hermann had concentrated on his career as a physicist before picking up the pace a bit as a player in the years leading up to this recording. Accompanied by a rhythm section including pianist Stefan Karlsson (who has made many fine CDs as a leader himself), bassist Bob Badgely (who spent six years with singer Joe Williams and also served as the house bassist in the long running jazz radio series Four Queens Jazz Night from Las Vegas), guitarist Curt Warren, and drummer Santo Savino, Hermann and Fontana complement one another's playing throughout the CD, which ...

I've Got My Fingers Crossed: A Celebration Of...
$17.69 This jazz-themed performance release travels back to June 13, 1980, at Stockholm's famous Jazz and Blues Festival, where The Gerry Mulligan Quartet (comprised of baritone sax player Mulligan, bassist Peter Axelsson, drummer Ronnie Gardener, and pianist Don Trenner) headline a live set before an enthusiastic festival audience. Selections include "Out Back of the Barn," "Bernie's Tune," "Five Brothers," and several more.
Considered one of the few masters of the jazz baritone sax, Gerry Mulligan (1927-1996) became one of the most innovative creators of the cool jazz movement. Apart from his skills as a superlative saxophonist, he also played the piano and was an extraordinary composer and arranger. Evidence of the latter can be found in his inspiring writing for the seminal 1949 Birth of the Cool album by the Miles Davis nonet, where he ...
