This 16-track collection traces the recording career of Johnson working with various piano and guitar accompanists from the '30s to the '40s in a variety of settings. Johnson's had a straightforward manner of putting over a blues-tinged number, and her no frills approach is heard to good effect on numbers like "I Drink Good Whiskey," "Got a Man in the 'Bama Mines," and "He Roars Like a Lion." The various tracks have fine support from Blind John Davis, Joshua Altheimer, George Barnes, Big Bill Broonzy, Eddie Miller, Black Bob, Willie B. James, and others providing sparse but effective backing on all the numbers. Johnson is one of the true hidden treasures in female blues and this excellent collection shows exactly why. ~ Cub Koda

Yas Yas Girl 1937-1947 album
$11.65 After more than a decade of recording for other labels, George Thorogood & the Destroyers moved back to EMI/Capitol for the release of 2009's THE DIRTY DOZEN. Split into two sides and consisting of covers of classic blues songs, some bar band favorites, and a couple of lesser-known tracks, the album digs back into the archives to uncover some buried tracks from the '80s and '90s. What's uncanny is that ...

| | Gary Moore Bad For You Baby CD (2008)
Yas Yas Girl 1937-1947 album
$10.49 Another year, another Gary Moore blues-rock album nearly interchangeable with the last. That's no problem for fans or even newcomers, because despite the surface similarities between releases, Moore never seems to be going through the motions for the sake of further bulking up his already substantial catalog. His tough guitar lines remain biting yet classy, and his underappreciated voice is strong and convincing on originals and covers that nail all of the blues-rock bases without sounding rote. While there are no surprises here, Bad for You Baby is far from a disappointment. Moore continues a string of rugged, post-hard rock, power blues that he has carved his niche in since 1990's Still Got the Blues. He applies his throaty vocals and feral guitar to a pair of Muddy Waters tunes to impressive effect. No one will mistake his versions of Waters' "Walking Through the Park" or "Someday Baby" for the classic Chess era nuggets they are. Yet Moore's rocked up attack hits the mark for being relatively faithful to their melodies even as he wields his power blues sledgehammer. Moore boogies ...

| | Very Best Of The Byrds CD (2006)
Yas Yas Girl 1937-1947 CD music
$14.29 The two dozen tracks on this single-disc survey of the Byrds include all the obvious singles like "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Turn! Turn! Turn!," and "Eight Miles High" as well as some key album tracks like Gram Parsons' lovely "Hickory Wind" and the unsung psychedelic gem "I See You," making this an OK, if somewhat random, survey of an interesting and influential pop band. ~ Steve Leggett
Although they are every bit as influential as fellow 1960s innovators the Beatles and the Beach Boys, compilations of classic material by the Byrds have been less frequent. When they have popped up, these albums have tended to focus on specific periods and rarely attempted a definitive retrospective. However, this welcome compilation from the British arm of Columbia Records remedies those problems by collecting a top-shelf array of material from the group's Columbia recordings on a single, comprehensive disc. From early folk-rock hits like "Mr. Tambourine Man" to the Indian-flavored ...
