This second record from Austin, Texas indie-pop collective SILVER SCOOTER backs breezy minimalist rock with morose, yet hopeful lyrics.
Silver Scooter's second full-length album, 1999's Orleans Parish, continues in the style they established with 1997's The Other Palm Springs: catchy, driving indie pop with lyrics alternately sad and hopeful. The drums are restrained and simple, laying a solid foundation on which the guitar and bass build shining melodies. Songs such as "Sleight of Hand" and "Cancer & Wide-Eyed Looks" are both melancholy and catchy, the at times mournful lyrics balanced by the bouncing instrumentation. "Deliver Me Driver" could be a letter from a Silver Scooter fan, the narrator singing, "I love your songs/they're filled with melody and melancholy." This, in fact, is the essence of this Austin band: emotional songs often touching on themes of loss and loneliness, but delivered in such a way that makes these things not seem so bad. ~ Brandon Gentry

| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
Orleans Parish CD music
$16.24 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. And even as she's becoming omnipresent, with her songs mingling with those who co-opt her on the radio, she still is slightly skewed, willing to go so far over the top she goes ...
| | Neil Young Harvest Moon Live CD (2009)
Orleans Parish music CDs
$14.44 Unlike previous entries in Neil Young's Archives series, Dreamin' Man Live '92 does not capture a specific gig. Instead, it's a compilation of highlights from the tour he took prior to recording Harvest Moon, as he aired the album's ten songs alone with his guitar (or on one occasion ...
| | Mariah Carey Merry Christmas CD (1994)
Orleans Parish songs
$8.75 At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs.
She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" shows off a dynamic voice that is hard to match. She has fun with the Phil Spector ...

| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Orleans Parish CD music
$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best ...

| | Led Zeppelin CDs (1993)
Orleans Parish songs
$45.35 Digitally remastered by Jimmy Page and George Marino at Sterling Sound.
Contains 31 tracks from Led Zeppelin's nine studio albums not included on the original Zeppelin box set. Includes one previously unreleased track and a 48-page booklet featuring photographs, and complete credits.
This pivotal quartet was formed in October 1968 by Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant and John Bonham. On Led Zeppelin, Page's staggering dexterity was matched by Plant's expressive, beseeching voice, a combination that flourished on Led Zeppelin II. A greater subtlety was emphasized on Led Zeppelin III, and Led Zeppelin IV included the anthemic 'Stairway To Heaven', 'Black Dog' and 'Rock 'N' Roll'. However, the effusive praise was more muted for Houses Of The Holy. A concurrent US tour helped to finance an in-concert film, issued in 1976 as The Song Remains The Same. Physical Graffiti, a double set, gave full rein to the quartet's diverse interests. Advance orders alone assured Presence platinum status. Although lacking the definition of earlier work, In Through The Out Door was a strong collection on which John Paul Jones emerged as the unifying factor. Rehearsals were then undertaken for another US tour, but in September 1980, Bonham was found dead. On 4 December, Swansong announced that the group had officially retired, although a collection of archive material, Coda, was subsequently issued. Led Zeppelin are now rightly recognized as one of the most influential bands of the rock era.
Out-of-print in the US! Two CD set containing digitally remastered versions of the remaining 30 tracks from Led Zeppelin's nine studio albums that were not included in the original four CD Led Zeppelin box plus one previously unreleased cut: 'Baby Come On Home'. Although the first box contains most of the Classic Rock radio staples, ...
| | Curved Air Air Conditioning CD (1970)
Orleans Parish album
$11.59 In its initial vinyl form, Curved Air's debut album is one of the prog rock movement's most prized artifacts -- not for the music (for that, it goes without saying, is flawless), but for the picture-disc format which had never previously graced a 12" rock record. A glimmering of that sought-after magnificence lives on, of course, in the artwork which has graced every subsequent release, this Collectors' Choice reissue included. Sadly, however, no other attempt is made to replicate the original jewel; indeed, beyond a straightforward dub of the album, Air Conditioning's American CD debut is something of a disappointment. No bonus tracks, no liner notes, no remastering -- nothing, in fact, beyond one of the finest classical rock fusions of the age. Curved Air were an unwieldy beast at the best of times, an uneasy liaison between Sonja Kristina's rampant rock sensibilities and her bandmates' undisguised virtuosity. Keyboard player Francis Monkman, in particular, led the group into some genuinely uncharted territory -- it was he who named the group after a Terry Riley composition; he who consumed side two of each album for ...
