In a way, Playin' Up a Storm doesn't really highlight Gregg Allman's strengths, since it's a little smoother and soul-inflected than his work with the Allman Brothers. Then again, that's not a problem; after all, why make a solo album that's exactly like your full-time gig? Consequently, Playin' Up a Storm is a well-made, expertly performed set of blues-rock, soul-pop, and straight-ahead rock & roll. There aren't any true classics here, but the thing that makes it one of Allman's best solo efforts is the terrific performances. Not only is he in fine voice, delivering each song with conviction, but his supporting band -- featuring such luminaries as Dr. John and Bill Payne -- is sterling. All the grooves are in the pocket, the sound is enticing, and the overall effect is just right. Not an earth-shattering record, but it will please true Allman fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Gregg Allman Playin' Up A Storm Songs Playin' Up A Storm Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Easily one of my favorite albums of all time!!!!!! I first heard this recording on vinyl back in the late 70's. I also had it on 8 track and later on cassette. It was blues, it was jazz, it was rock n roll. It was different. Still to this day, I can put this CD on at a party or at work, and everyone wants to know who it is and where they can get it. It's so laid, back yet energetic. It's not a 70's sort of thing. This recording is timeless. This is Gregg Allman at his best. Most people who never liked Gregg or the Allman Brothers can't believe what they are hearing. I would recommend this CD to anyone who wants to kick back and escape. Submitted by dondrum (Louisiana) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Gregg has never sounded better! This is an great album that is often overlooked. It does not have the blazing guitars of an Allman Brothers record and it has a slicker sound than Gregg's masterpiece, "Laid Back"- but it is a great R'B soaked album with a very uptown sound. Gregg has never sounded better. Submitted by Maurice (Doraville, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Playin' Up A Storm music CDs
$7.35 After the runaway success of the Allman Brothers' classic Brothers and Sisters LP -- an album on which Dickey Betts virtually architected the open loping country sound with his newly found singing voice and easy, slimmed down guitar style -- the guitarist decided to try his hand at a solo album. Highway Call is, in essence, the second chapter in Betts finding his own voice as not only a singer, but also as a songwriter as well. At a brief half-hour in length, Highway Call is nonetheless an emotionally powerful slice of small country life offered with ...

| | Echo & The Bunnymen Crocodiles CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Playin' Up A Storm album
$7.34 Emerging from Liverpool, England in 1980, Echo and the Bunnymen were hailed as the vanguard of a new psychedelic-rock movement. While vocalist Ian McCulloch's cryptic lyrics and Will Sergeant's colorful guitar arrangements do evoke the dark, brooding intensity of '60s groups like the Doors, Echo and the Bunnymen owed more to English post-punk than '60s rock. Featuring songs that range from the supercharged three-chord garage rock of "Do It Clean" and the crashing album opener, "Going Up," to the hazy neo-psychedelia of "Villiers Terrace" and "Pictures on My Wall," CROCODILES is a remarkably good debut, one that established Echo and the Bunnymen as one of most creative and charismatic English rock bands of the '80s. The American edition of CROCODILES also boasts the single "Rescue," a dramatic, melodic track that layers McCulloch's gritty rhythm guitar over Sergeant's chiming lead and producer David Balfe's subtle keyboard work to create one of the definitive U.K. singles of the post punk era. While Echo and the Bunnymen would later become modern-rock icons, CROCODILES captures them in all their raw, ragged glory, trying to emulate the work of their heroes David Bowie and the Velvet Underground but instead creating music of startling originality.
Inspired by psychedelia, sure. Bit of Jim Morrison in the vocals? OK, it's there. But for all the references and connections that can be drawn (and they ...
