CROWN OF CREATION is a rich and varied collection showing off the different talents of the main songwriters. Among the many memorable moments are Grace Slick's beautiful vocal on "Lather," the band's sensitive cover version of David Crosby's "Triad," and Jorma Kaukonen's stunning wah-wah solo on "If You Feel." Add to this the intense lyrics (such as the drug-themed "Greasy Heart"), Marty Balin and Paul Kantner's consistently strong vocals throughout, and Jack Casady's remarkable dexterity on bass. This is most certainly the Airplane's REVOLVER.

$13.59 In THE BIRDS, Alfred Hitchcock's heart-pounding follow-up to PSYCHO, the director couples a tone of rigorous morality with dark humor to create a thriller that begins as a light comedy and ends as an apocalyptic allegory. | | Traffic Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys CD (1971) Bonus Tracks
Crown Of Creation songs
$6.59 THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS was a big change from the quiet, largely acoustic flavor of Traffic's reunion album JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE. Although the gentle opening track, "Hidden Treasure," and the meandering, mellow closer, "Rainmaker," were in keeping with the pastoral vibe of the previous record, sandwiched in between those are several increasingly aggressive and lyrically sour songs about that evergreen topic--life in a rock & roll band.
The venality of the business gets a workout in the 12-minute title track, a slow-building jazz-rock groove that starts with a sense of quiet menace and ends with a pealing, distorted guitar solo, with one of Steve Winwood's most impassioned and lengthy organ solos at the song's heart. "Rock & Roll Stew" and Jim Capaldi's sneering putdown "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" are even more forceful, with only the groovy ecological message of "Many a Mile to Freedom" lightening the mood. Even that song ...
| | Kinks Ultimate Collection CDs (2002) (Import) Thailand
Crown Of Creation album
$19.69 Although generally not as highly regarded by the critics as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or the Who, the Kinks may well have influenced far more musicians. The three-chord sledgehammer proto-metal burst of teenage lust called "You Really Got Me," the Kinks' third single and first hit, touched off a garage band explosion, which in turn influenced the rise of punk a decade later. Blessed with an astute songwriter in Ray Davies, the Kinks followed the template of "You Really Got Me" for a couple years, racking up hits with "All Day and All of the Night," "Tired of Waiting for You," and "Till the End of the Day." But Davies had more than one card in his pocket, and he blossomed into a sharp social satirist ("Dedicated Follower of Fashion"). By the time the album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was released in 1968, Davies had become a master of elegiac studies in English suburbia. The gender-bending "Lola" was a big hit in 1970 and the Kinks entered the video era in 1983 with "Come Dancing" ...

| | Citizen Cope Clarence Greenwood Recording CD (2004) Import
Crown Of Creation music CDs
$25.59 When a singer/songwriter fights the big record label -- in this case Dreamworks -- because it doesn't understand the artist's vision, then the artist buys his way out of a contract so he can go somewhere that cares, it's admirable and has a "this must be good stuff" allure for sure. Give one listen to The Clarence Greenwood Recordings and you might have a guess at why Dreamworks "mishandled" Citizen Cope. Ponderous, unfinished, and pointless when it's at its worst, the album Citizen Cope -- singer/songwriter Clarence Greenwood's alias -- fought so hard for is filled with metaphors and characters that are murky. Nothing in the surrounding context suggests you should try to figure them out either. A lost soul who falls in love with a billboard is the subject of "Pablo Picasso," but there's no insight, no pathos, and no point. It's sad when anyone mistakes inanimate objects for someone who loves them, but Citizen Cope's use of the character is so detached it borders on exploitive. The timely "people wanna bomb us" number, "Bullet and a Target," is the album's centerpiece and single, but it's just another shock-value laundry list of depressing situations -- Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" for the Dave Matthews generation. It also has one of those horrible Parental Advisory sticker-dodging moments that kept rearing its ugly head in 2004. The "father" in the story -- another faceless character who doesn't get fleshed out -- just doesn't give a F word, which is removed, leaving an audible blank space that the lyric sheet claims should've been filled with the word "enough." Turns out the devil you don't know (Arista in this case) ...
