As leader of the Screaming Trees, Mark Lanegan helped introduce the mainstream to the Seattle sound known somewhat dubiously as grunge. His rough vocal stylings fit perfectly with his band's swirling hard rock attack. As a solo artist, however, Lanegan took a much different approach, playing the part of the modern-day blues wanderer. FIELD SONGS, released in 2001, is an intense collection of blues and folk-flecked guitar numbers augmented by touches of atmospheric noise and occasionally more elaborate production and arrangements. Lanegan's tales of desperation, loneliness, and loss feel both intimate and vast, and show the singer-songwriter to be much more than what the 1990s hype machine might lead one to believe.
Mark Lanegan is best known for his years as the vocalist for the Screaming Trees. On this release he has enlisted the help of longtime collaborator Mike Johnson (Dinosaur Jr.) and Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden). Without question, this is one of the most fulfilled albums of his career. 12 tracks. 2001 release.

Field Songs
$8.85 Shortly before the early-1990s grunge boom hit, Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan was already blazing his own path with his solo debut, THE WINDING SHEET. Marking a considerable departure from the Trees' feedback-drenched neo-psychedelia, this spare collection of acoustic-leaning songs allows Lanegan to wander into darker, more unsettling territory, as revealed on the thrillingly bleak "Mockingbirds" and the haunting title track. Not only do these subdued songs, co-written with guitarist Mike Johnson, allow Lanegan's deep, husky voice to hang in the air longer, they share a shadowy, nearly macabre sensibility with other revered artists such as Nick Cave and Tom ...
| | Mark Lanegan Whiskey For The Holy Ghost CD (1994)
Field Songs
$9.75 On his second solo outing, 1994's WHISKEY FOR THE HOLY GHOST, Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan unveils a set of tunes that is more dynamic and cohesive than his spare, brooding debut, THE WINDING SHEET. Once again collaborating with multi-instrumentalist Mike Johnson, among others, Lanegan uses his deep, gravelly voice to maximum effect on these wonderful songs of woe, which include the hypnotic, David Lynchian "The River Rise" and the dark, pastoral "Kingdoms of Rain." Arguably Lanegan's best solo album, THE HOLY GHOST predicted that the perpetually melancholy Pacific Northwestern ...

Field Songs
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version ...

Thus, all eyes were on Lanegan for BUBBLEGUM, which features guest shots by everyone from PJ Harvey and Queens leader Josh Homme to Izzy Stradlin ...
