Master Of The Stratosphere album
$10.49 Maynard Ferguson's version of "Birdland" from this LP was a bit of a hit and he fares fairly well on "Stella by Starlight" and "Over the Rainbow," but overall this typically commercial Columbia album is of lesser interest. MF, at the height of his popularity, was clearly looking for a hit, which is why he recorded "Theme from Battlestar Galactica" and roughly half of the poppish material on this rather forgettable effort. The trumpeter/bandleader would record worse albums than this LP, but this one is weak enough. ~ Scott Yanow
Popular. A big seller, but weak from the jazz standpoint. ~ Ron Wynn
Maynard Ferguson has been considered one of the premier jazz trumpet virtuosos for over 4 decades! He has a cult following of trumpet players all over the world. He has released numerous albums over those years, his most popular being on the Columbia label in the 70's and 80's. Carnival was originally issued in 1978 and reached # 113 on the Billboard charts. This album features his interpretation of the jazz classic 'Birdland' as well as 7 other tracks. This album is making its worldwide CD debut on Wounded Bird Records. 2003.

| | Maynard Ferguson M.F. Horn CD (1970)
Master Of The Stratosphere CD music
$12.39 Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson began his successful "comeback" (after several years of low-profile activity) with this well-received Columbia LP. Featuring his English orchestra (and such soloists as altoist Pete King and Danny Moss on tenor), Ferguson had a minor hit in "MacArthur Park," showcases some Indian musicians on "Chala Nata," and shows throughout that his mind was open toward both newer forms of jazz and pop music. It's an interesting if unessential set. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Maynard Ferguson New Vintage CD (1977)
Master Of The Stratosphere music CDs
$13.69 Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's 1977 album New Vintage was yet another foray into the gluttonously epic, rock-infused jazz he had already perfected on such albums as Primal Scream and Conquistador -- the latter of which contained Ferguson's popular version of "Gonna Fly Now," the theme from Rocky. Featuring his cheekily named MF Big Band, New Vintage once again centers around the high-note horn man's take on a movie song, this time "Star Wars (Main Title)" gets the disco-funk treatment. Utterly gimmicky and bereft of any actual jazz, the track works now as a time capsule of late-'70s kitsch. This is not to say it's bad, just cheesy. Yeah, no self-respecting post-bopper really wanted anything to do with this stuff back then, but for classes of middle- and high-school-age kids lucky enough to catch one of the MF Big Band's school tours, this was the proof that "band geeks" could have fun and be cool at the same time. However, why he thought anyone would ever have a need for a disco-funk ...

| | Maynard Ferguson M.F. Horn-Live At Jimmy's V.4 & V.5 CD (1973)
Master Of The Stratosphere album
$11.69 Recorded live in New York in 1974 and originally released as a double vinyl album, this set captures the Maynard Ferguson big band at its scorching, swinging best. Fiery solos from Ferguson and saxophonists Bruce Johnstone and Ferdinand Povel are the most obvious of the musical riches on offer here, but the ensemble performances of pieces such as "The Fox Hunt" and "MacArthur Park" are just as breathtaking. This collection features 1970s big band jazz at its finest.
