Former Oblivians and Compulsive Gamblers frontman Greg Cartwright cools his boiling garage leanings to a simmer on the Memphis musician's debut with the Reigning Sound. It's all about the material on Break Up Break Down, and there are only scattered references to the primal blues-rock of Cartwright's notable '90s projects. Heart-tugging vocals and songwriting are the central components that this country-folk collection revolves around. Highlights like the waltz-time lament "Goodbye" have just what it takes to grip the inner Hank Williams in every garage rocker, without tripping any irony-minded alerts that equate anything emotional with overt sentimentality. Perhaps this delicate country-rock balancing act is what impressed the Hives enough to take the Reigning Sound out on tour, or perhaps the decision was tribute to Cartwright's overlooked punk/gospel work with Oblivians. Such thoughts won't concern fans of traditional American music after they've confronted the authenticity and the sweetness of Break Up Break Down. ~ Vincent Jeffries

| Break Up, Break Down Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Superb, slow 60´s garage. Reigning Sound
Break up... break down, CD (Sympathy For The Record Industry)
This is the first time I hear Greg Cartwright´s new band, Reigning sound. This CD, of course released on the always wonderful Sympathy For The Record Industry, carries on where the Compulsive Gamblers left off (Greg´s previous band with former Oblivians partner, Jack Yarber). I´ve always been a fan of the Oblivians, Gamblers and Greg´s solo-record, so I somehow knew this was gonna be right up my alley too. It starts with a slow-tempo, organ-drained 60´s garage ballad. A bit too slow perhaps. But I´m over it with the next one, "I don´t care". Same type of song, only faster, and with that typical Greg Cartwright tragical love-theme. But that goes for every song on this record, and I love it! Life is hard, and love is hard. In my case anyway, and "Break up...break down" is a perfect soundtrack for this soft-hearted kid. My only wish is that there were a bit more guitar, and a little more tempo. Sad love songs may have a happy-go-lucky melody too. So it´s not a record you put on your party, you´d probably kill the mood and be thrown out. But I like it real good, as it´s perfect for that special moment, with that special girl. Those which really stands out here, and my personal favorites, are "As Long", with a dangerously catchy old-time country beat, and matching steel-guitar. "Want you" is as sad as ever, "Waiting for the day" is another up-tempo killer. I really dig the `waiting for the day, when you can love again´ refrain. "So sad"... well, the title says it all: `it breaks my heart, to see us part´, Greg sings in a more tender voice than Lesley Gore. Beatiful! The last song, "I´m so thankful", is actually the most rocking number, and pleased me quite a bit. So if you´re sad and alone, put on this record. In love with a girl, put on this record. Or hanging out with her, melt her heart with "Break up... break down".

Purchase Break Up, Break Down CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Detroit Cobras Mink Rat Or Rabbit CD (1998)
Break Up, Break Down
$11.05 The Detroit Cobras manage a pretty rare feat with their debut LP by transcending classic R&B material by sticking not to the original sound or slavishly recreating arrangements and stylistic trappings of the genre, but by finding the essence of the rough-and-tumble spirit of the original streetwise tunes the Cobras tackle on Mink Rat. That they've chosen as their material obscure R&B nuggets from such legendary labels as Fortune Records and tunes from the glory days of regional hits and AM radio (with the left-field cover of the Oblivians' "Bad Man" here titled "Bad Girl") only aids and abets their efforts to make this material uniquely their own. Led by rhythm guitarist Steve Shaw, the Cobras are so tight, instrumentally, that they're loose. The sound, in modern terms, is dirty garage rock, but emboldened by a sense of rhythm ...

| | Reigning Sound Too Much Guitar CD (2004)
Break Up, Break Down
$11.59 Greg Cartwright sums up his approach on the third album from the Reigning Sound with the title, Too Much Guitar -- here, Cartwright moves the old-school soul influences that were in the forefront on Break Up Break Down and Time Bomb High School to the back burner in favor of a hip-shakin' set of loud and primal guitar-based rock & roll. While Cartwright's passion for R&B is still prominent in these songs (and their performances), here it manifests itself in a set of tunes that take Stones/Pretties-style raunch and filters it through ...
| | Reigning Sound Home For Orphans CD (2005)
Break Up, Break Down
$9.95 This short (28 minutes) album is primarily made up of outtakes from the sessions for Reigning Sound's 2004 scorcher Too Much Guitar, but if that disc was too much rock and not enough soul for you, then you're in luck. Home for Orphans is dominated by the sort of moody, low-key laments that are Greg Cartwright's real secret weapon when he isn't cranking his amp up to ten, along with a superb cover of Gene Clark's "Here Without You" that fits this set like a glove. While "If You Can't Give Me Everything," "Funny Thing," and "Medication" all appeared on Too Much Guitar, these versions turn down the volume and dig into the lonely heart and ...

$12.89 One of the finest jazz singers not only of those based in the Pacific Northwest but in the U.S., Kelley Johnson is in top form throughout this continually intriguing CD. Joined by an excellent rhythm section with either Geoffrey Keezer or John Hansen on piano and welcome guest spots for trumpeter Brian Lynch (who works very well with the singer) and altoist Steve Wilson, Johnson sounds quite happy throughout the set. At times her deep voice is reminiscent of Irene ...

| | Prism Brass Quintet Christmas Collage CD (2006)
Break Up, Break Down
$11.39 From the liner notes...We are very excited to release this CD of holiday music. Our goal is to present music that is both familiar and pleasing in new, exciting and interesting (dare we say clever!) ways. All of the arrangements are the brainchild of our good friend David Gilliland. The styles are a fusion of both traditional and contemporary jazz and classical music - often sharply juxtaposed. While most of the tracks on this album rely on the foundation of the brass quintet, several utilize percussion, bass, flute and vocals to broaden the the timbral palette. The music ranges from the traditional, such ...
