Like Desperados music CDs
$6.09 The Diane Warren tune and semi-R&B vocalisms should clue you in to the fact that the young Ms. Rimes is stretching the definition of "Country" on SITTIN' ON TOP OF THE WORLD, but in the late '90s Nashville scene, that's practically the norm. Considering that her previous album was a batch of "inspirational" (if not Gospel) tunes, this more secular outing could almost be considered the real followup to her kazillion-selling debut recording. As such, it represents the kind of changes that come hard and fast in the life of a teenager (which she is, even if she doesn't sound like it). Many of the songs find her moving further and further away from her Country roots in pursuit of a more pop-oriented sound, though even the least Nashville-sounding tunes here contain flashes of pedal steel and vocal twang to remind the audience of where Rimes comes from.
Recorded at Rosewood Studios, Tyler, Texas.
Personnel: LeAnn Rimes (percussion, background vocals); Jerry Metheny, Marty Walsh (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Milo Deering (acoustic guitar, dobro, fiddle); Junior Knight, Kevin Bailey ...

$12.55 The 2001 remastered edition of NOEL features 6 bonus tracks and new cover art as well as a replica of the original cover and liner notes.
Originally released on Vanguard (79230). Includes original liner notes by Joan Baez and reissue liner notes by Peter Schickele.
An unexpectedly delightful collection of traditional Christmas carols, 1966's NOEL is one of a handful of Joan Baez albums arranged and produced by Peter Schickele--better known as comedic classical performer P.D.Q. Bach--during the mid-'60s. Even more than 1968's baroquely-orchestrated BAPTISM, NOEL sounds more like a Peter Schickele album than a Joan Baez album. Nearly a third of the 17 tracks are instrumentals on which Baez doesn't even appear, and although her voice is front and center throughout, Schickele's arrangements largely use it as merely another instrument in his ornate arrangements. ...

| | Henson Cargill Very Well Traveled Man CD (2005) (Import) Canada
Like Desperados album
$15.25 A superlative collection of the C&W songwriter's most cherished material; includes "Reprints (Plastic People)" and "Row Row Row." 2005, German import.
Henson Cargill became mainstream country music's token protest singer after his socially conscious hit "Skip a Rope" crossed over to the pop charts in 1967-1968. His followup hit, "Row Row Row," again alluded to children and social issues but made no point other than that different people have different experiences. "None of My Business," Cargill's final Top Ten hit, was practically a carbon copy of "Skip a Rope" and assailed apathy without being very controversial. Cargill's lower-charting hits and album tracks could be pricklier and more ambiguous, sometimes using vague philosophical musings as an excuse to wallow in depictions of domestic abuse, murder, and other unpleasant business. The vague nature of Cargill's "protest" songs was probably necessary from a commercial standpoint because the mainstream country audience did not want to hear progressive critiques of the establishment and the breakdown of social responsibility; consequently, many of Cargill's songs, composed by well-known Nashville songwriters, sounded edgy in the context of country radio but didn't say much of anything. "Skip a Rope," Cargill's one bona fide classic, is the exception for taking on racism in a genre that often promoted it (witness the dialect humor of Jim Nesbitt's minor hit "Husbands-in-Law," also released in 1967). The ...
