1983's ALL THE WAY STRONG is probably Third World's most pop-oriented album. In the early '80s, after Bob Marley's untimely death, reggae came somewhat adrift as bands explored new arenas in an attempt to pick up Marley's mantle as the public face of the music. (As it turned out, none of them were entirely successful before the advent of electronic dancehall reggae in the mid-'80s changed the music forever.)
Even more than their compadres Black Uhuru, Third World made the decision to emphasize the pop elements of their music, adding synths and electronic drums to their bass-heavy arrangements, and featuring a new emphasis on R&B-style love songs over Rasta sloganeering. The single "Love Is Out to Get You" is representative of the album as a whole; unfortunately, neither it nor the album had much crossover success at the time.

All The Way Strong album
$5.95 The debut solo release from the Ohio native, Private Line features a nice mixture of songs and spawned four chart singles. The vocal energy Gerald LeVert brings to his songs is revealed in each lyric. The first release was "Private Line." With a locomotive rhythm track and a churnin' horn arrangement, "Private Line" is complemented with a catchy hook. It became a favorite among many, claiming the number one spot on the Billboard R&B charts. The second release was the pop-oriented single "Baby Hold on to Me." This duet, with his father Eddie LeVert, Sr., is a splendidly arranged ballad in which father and son immerse themselves in the lyrics. Like its predecessor, it claimed the number one spot and number 37 on the ...
| | Bootsy Collins Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! CD (1977)
All The Way Strong CD music
$7.89 One of the key figures in the development of funk, Bootsy Collins played bass in James Brown's JB's in the late '60s and early '70s and was later an integral member of George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic ensemble. Collins' approach to the bass is like none other. He plays it like a guitar, adding long, dazzling fills while simultaneously anchoring the band with a heavy, elastic bottom-end. During his P-Funk tenure, Collins' personality (exemplified in both his playing and his freakishly glamorous on-stage persona) became so popular that he soon began his own outfit--Bootsy's Rubber Band.
1977's AHH...mines the psychedelicized grooves born of the P-Funk formula--adding equal parts superior musicianship, dance floor abandon, space-age thematics, and a silliness intended to subvert and liberate. Tracks like "Rubber Duckie" are unabashed dance anthems while "The Pinocchio Theory" ...

| | Chicken Shack Complete Blue Horizon Sessions CDs (2006) Remastered
All The Way Strong album
$15.09 Formed and led by guitarist/vocalist Stan Webb, Chicken Shack were one of the first bands to be signed to the Blue Horizon label in the mid-'60s. As of this compilation's release in 2006, Webb was still fronting a version of the group. While never attaining any success in the States, Chicken Shack were well known in the U.K., with fleeting success second only to John Mayall and labelmates Fleetwood Mac. Webb's Freddie King-styled guitar and vocalist/pianist Christine Perfect's (later McVie) singing were the major draws to this second-tier British blues band, but neither were strong enough to carry the group's success to the U.S. market. This three-disc set collects the band's entire output for the imprint from 1967-1969 and includes alternate takes, singles, and B-sides (56 tracks in all), and also features terrific liner notes by label head/producer Mike Vernon. Perfect stayed for two of four releases for the label, exiting before the recording of 1969's 100 Ton Chicken. Hence she appears on about half of this disc, leaving after the U.K. hit single "I'd Rather Go Blind." Webb's often wobbly but amiable singing is an acquired taste, so Perfect's husky, smooth vocals and classy blues piano runs were major contributions to the band, and strong points they ...
| | Bob Marley Uprising CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
All The Way Strong CD music
$11.99 Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Bob Marley generated a staggering number of great records during his brief time in the world's spotlight. Although he cut his first recordings in the early 1960s, it was not until the 1973 release of CATCH A FIRE that Marley and the Wailers became international stars. Eight years later Marley was dead, a victim of cancer. In between, he recorded eight studio albums and several live albums, all of excellent quality.
UPRISING is Marley's final album, and it's also one of his best. As ...
