Chuck Brown is known to R&B aficionados as one of the founding fathers of go-go, the minimalist, groove-based funk variant that enjoyed a brief vogue in the '80s (though Brown had been doing his thing since the '70s). Brown's up-and-down career has seen several stabs at stardom, but the one thing that's never changed has been his commitment to his sound.
As evidenced by this energetic live set, Brown's approach hasn't changed much over the years, for which we should be thankful. He's still pumping out the same brand of pulsing, sweaty, irresistibly danceable party music that turned him from a Washington, DC phenomenon into a national name decades ago. Whether he's churning out his take on the Stylistics' '70s R&B classic "People Make the World Go 'Round," or giving up the funk on his own tunes such as "Wind Me Up Chuck," Brown's sound is as hip-shaking and irrepressible as ever.
