On Kenny Neal's third Telarc release, One Step Closer, he combines the Louisiana musical traditions he grew up listening to with a wide range of contemporary material. Among the 12 tracks are soul-blues renditions of Bob Dylan's "Walk Out in the Rain," Nick Lowe's "High on a Hilltop," and John Hiatt's "Lover's Will." Neal's developing skills as a songwriting have been convincingly affected by roots rock and Americana, as showcased on "Backdoor Tipper," "No More One More Chance," "Whiskey Tears," and "She Ain't Happy Unless She's Sad." ~ Al Campbell

| | Kim Wilson Smokin' Joint CD (2001)
One Step Closer CD music
$13.49 SMOKIN' JOINT was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.
Best known for fronting Texas legends The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Kim Wilson spent much of the '90s balancing his time between his old group and kick-starting his solo career. In parlaying the experience of playing an average of over 200 dates annually, Wilson's first live solo release SMOKIN' JOINT finds him serving up club dates recorded in Phoenix and Hermosa Beach, California in 1999 and 2000. With the Hollywood Fats rhythm section of bassist Larry ...
| | Tommy Castro Guilty Of Love CD (2001)
One Step Closer music CDs
$12.45 Dedicated to late San Francisco blues heroes Stu Blank and John Lee Hooker and featuring Hooker's final vocal appearance, Guilty of Love (33rd Street Records) holds the promise of something special. Unfortunately, it's a bit flat, lacking the fire you might expect. While Castro's material is eclectic and clever, incorporating rock, soul, R&B, and roots, it's not always above cliché. Also, some tracks are given a subdued, if not sluggish treatment. "Face of Love," for example, ...
| | Ronnie Earl & Friends CD (2001)
One Step Closer songs
$10.59 Ronnie Earl's first album after suffering from a bout with manic depression that sidelined him from live work for a few years, is a surprisingly modest, unassuming affair. The titular friends include Fabulous Thunderbirds founder/harpist/vocalist Kim Wilson who splits the album's vocal duties with Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson. James Cotton, Band drummer Levon Helm, keyboardist David Maxwell, and New Orleans legend Irma Thomas (who contributes her distinctive vocals to only two stunning tunes) round out the ad hoc band. Recorded live in Woodstock, NY's Bearsville studio over three ...

$9.35 From the moment Tommy Castro and his band began playing their distinctive blend of blues, soul, and rock, in and around the San Francisco Bay Area in 1991, fans and critics alike have been enthralled both by his exceptional song writing ability and his passionate performances. One of America's leading blues publications, Blues Review, said, "Castro's energy and charisma leap right out ..." Musician Magazine said of the San Jose, California native, "Castro could be a star", and Playboy gushed, "Worshipped for his guitar virtuosity, Castro ...
