An anime series that joins the long tradition of period adventure stories, OTOGI ZOSHI comes from the same studio that produced the acclaimed GHOST IN THE SHELL and JIN-ROH. During the Heian Era, the Empire teeters on the edge of collapse. Famine and disease have swept the countryside, crime runs rampant, and members of the government bicker and scheme for power rather than solving problems. The last hope is the master archer Minamoto, sent by the Emperor to find the magical Magatama that can restore the land. However, disaster seems to loom when Minamoto himself becomes deathly ill. In order to save Japan, his sister Hikaru decides to pose as him and find the Magatama herself, beginning an epic journey full of danger, disguise, and friendship. This box set contains Volumes One, Two, and Three of the series. ...

Imax - T-Rex - Back To The Cretaceous review
DVD $6.59  3 stars
Carl Peterson (Matt Dillon) and Randy Dupree (Owen Wilson) have been friends forever. But everything changes when Carl marries Molly Thompson (Kate Hudson) and best man Dupree becomes the third wheel. Free-spirited Dupree's antics suddenly seem juvenile and Carl has to decide where his loyalty lies--with his new wife or his best friend. Still, when Carl discovers that Dupree is down on his luck--he's lost his job, his company car, and his apartment--he invites his best buddy to move in until he's back on his feet. Unfortunately, Dupree isn't exactly Molly's idea of the perfect houseguest. This perpetual bachelor is really an overgrown kid who moves in with a giant moosehead, likes to sleep in the buff, has some unpleasant hygiene issues, and treats life like one big party. Despite Dupree's inability to grow up, he has a good heart: he's just trying to find his niche and enjoy every day along the way. To make matters worse for Molly, Carl has become a cranky workaholic since his boss, Molly's father (Michael Douglas), promoted him. Disheartened by her new husband's late hours, Molly begins to spend more time with Dupree and to see his softer side--something that even Carl has never been aware of. Carl, meanwhile, begins to resent his lackadaisical friend and to question his motives. Ultimately, it's up to Dupree to get Carl and Molly back on track. Wilson gives Dupree a puppy-dog quality that makes him immensely likable, even when he's screwing up. Dillon is surprisingly funny as the straight man in the duo, trying to balance his old life with his new responsibilities. Supporting actor Seth Rogen is a hoot ...

Author Patrick Suskind enjoys a career shrouded in Salinger-esque mystery. Suskind's best-selling novel PERFUME was coveted by Hollywood for many years, and finally makes it to the screen in this production helmed by Tom Tykwer (RUN LOLA RUN). The film stays remarkably faithful to the author's vision, perfectly summoning up the brooding ominousness of small-town life in 18th-century France, and getting the casting of its central character, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw), exactly right. Grenouille is an orphan whose sense of smell is extraordinarily acute. He impresses master perfumer Baldini (Dustin Hoffman) enough to work for him, and this sets Grenouille off on an epic quest to find the perfect scent. When he discovers that killing young women and bottling their essence is the only way he can achieve his dream, Grenouille is soon a wanted man with multiple murders to his name. However, when it comes to making one last kill--namely the attractive redhead Laura (Rachel Hurd-Wood)--the young perfumer may have met his match in her overprotective father, Richis (Alan Rickman). Tykwer's film is an impressive achievement, not least because the subject of scent and the cinematic medium were always going to make uneasy bedfellows. Couple that with the weight of expectation caused by the millions of readers who have delighted in Suskind's words, and it needed a brave director to take on such a project. Whishaw is a revelation in his first major screen appearance, and Tykwer made a wise choice in ...
