The follow-up to Static-X's 1999 debut WISCONSIN DEATH TRIP finds the hard-hitting quartet continuing down the same industrial-flavored path of jackhammer tempi, leaden guitar crunch and crashing rhythms. Despite the amicable departure of guitarist Koichi Fukuda, former Dope axe- wielder Tripp Eisen does a fine job fitting in alongside founding members Wayne Static, Keny Jay, and Tony Campos. Working on the gloom and doom side of the tracks, Static-X keep things interesting with the kind of controlled chaos that makes for an interesting exercise in manipulating dynamics.
This studio experimentation encompasses everything from an unholy alliance of ambient textures and choppy industrial-strength riffs ("Permanence") to electronic blips and tortuously drawn out sturm and drang that could double as the soundtrack to Armageddon ("A Dios Alma Perdido"). Elsewhere, sputtering electronics and vocalist Static's defiant howl drive the breakneck "This Is Not" while a more sinister aura grips the considerably less frantic "Cold." Not for the faint of heart, MACHINE churns up and spits out any thoughts of Static-X suffering from a sophomore jinx.

Spin (7/01, p.127) - 6 out of 10 - "...The post-Ministry screech'n'stutter of this album tastes like Big Blackened chicken....[They] reach for a pounding darkness, organized around their frontman's distorto-howl and choppy riffs..." CMJ (5/28/01, p.17) - "...The big, bad, louder-than-a-bomb MACHINE is cyberiffic computer-core that takes its sonic cues from early Ministry..." Most modern hard rock bands miss the mark by over-emphasizing great riffs and neglecting the importance of complementary vocals. Luckily, such is not the case with Staind, who owe some nods to Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst for career guidance. ...

| | Mike Auldridge Blue Lonesome Wind CD (2001)
Machine songs
$14.05 Many progressive bluegrass musicians perform in a number of settings with a variety of players. Like jazz players, their commitment has more to do with making quality music than preserving one band. Dobroist Mike Auldridge, guitarist Richard Bennett, and mandolinist Jimmy Gaudreau are no exception. When they joined forces for This Old Town in 2000, no one could be sure they would record together again. In 2001 they returned with the lovely Blue Lonesome Wind. Bennett lends his expressive voice to the title track and to the self-penned "Satisfied to Stay," an upbeat piece featuring some superb group harmony. ...

$17.95 Mayhem, the black metal outfit from Sweden, do their dark and scary thing on this five track EP, which has been reissued on Britain's Misanthropy Records.
Wolf's Lair Abyss symbolizes two major steps for Mayhem: First, the return of vocalist Maniac, who contributed to 1987's Deathcrush EP before being replaced by the soon-to-be-dead Dead (who was followed by session vocalist Attila Csihar for black metal benchmark De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas). Secondly, it's notable within the group's dodgy, blood-specked catalog as its first ...

$12.29 Full Title - Contents Disloged During Shipping. What is it about northeastern Ohio? Some of the most challenging and adventurous bands of the American underground-Devo, Pere Ubu, the Electric Eels-have hailed from there, and this band, Tin Huey, stands tall on that list. Led by horn player Ralph Carney, keyboardist Harvey Gold and Waitress-to-be Chris Butler, Tin Huey put post-punk, free jazz, art rock and even blues into a Dadaist vaudeville stage show that somehow got them signed to Warner Brothers in ...
