| | Robert Barry Duets 2001: Live At The Empty Bottle CD Robert Barry Discography of CDs
No doubt, Chicago, IL-based tenor sax titan Fred Anderson is one of modern jazz's preeminent improvisers as he joins forces with ex-Sun Ra Arkestra drummer Robert Barry for this wonderfully recorded and altogether electrifying live session. Essentially, Duets 2001 is a rousing success, as the duo embarks upon a series of mid-tempo swing vamps atop free bop-style dialogue and brisk interplay, thanks to Anderson's corpulent tone, limberly executed lines, and Barry's polyrhythmic swing beats. With this release, Anderson exhibits his razor-sharp improvisational tactics along with a penchant for intertwining soul-drenched mini-themes with scathing lines. Here, the musicians maintain an elevated degree of excitement amid subtle diversions and sinuous undercurrents. Simply put, Duets 2001 is a tour de force, yet it all sounds so unaffected. Recommended. ~ Glenn Astarita

Alternative Press (12/01, p.74) - 8 out of 10 - "...Musically free but never overpowering, muscular but still beautiful." The Wire (8/01, p.51) - "...Captures the inventive urgency of Anderson's blowing....there's no padding, no filler, but lots of unexpected detours that, once executed, sound like the only viable choice..." CMJ (6/11/01, p.23) - "...Nothing short of spectacular...One can hear and feel the blues in every note and beat of this duo's soulfully adventurous music." Down Beat (10/01, p.64) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...A rare encounter....Barry is steady and precise...creating patterns and setting the pace....Anderson responds with a big, effusive tone and bluesy melodies..." A LOVE SUPREME is the essential example of the genius of John Coltrane. In what has become the apotheosis of jazz music, this eminently accessible work bridges the gap between music and spirituality, between art and life. With the ultimate incarnation of the jazz quartet, Coltrane brings together all of his turbulent elements into a cohesive paean to spirituality, one which is fully appreciable by the uninitiated.
A LOVE SUPREME is a 33-minute work divided into four movements. "Acknowledgment" starts the album with a heraldic summoning from Coltrane's tenor saxophone, full and joyous, which approximates the tone of the prayer he provides in the album's liner notes. The solo that follows reveals an artist ...

Duets 2001: Live At The Empty Bottle music CDs
$8.45 Whether essaying his skittering, free-form variations on cornet, trumpet or pocket trumpet, the endlessly melodic creations of Don Cherry were a triumph of imagination over technique. Cherry was one of the most recognizable improvisers in all of jazz, who overcame his lack of virtuoso chops with melodic and harmonic resourcefulness, terrific swing and a childlike delight in the joy of a toy. There is a playfulness and a sense of discovery to his music--particularly his three masterful sessions for Blue Note--that mitigates the emotional gravity and rhythmic turbulence of his creations.
Often overshadowed by his legendary collaborators, it remains no coincidence that on the greatest recordings ...
