BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. D Is for Dumptruck is Dumptruck's debut album, released in 1983 on Incas Records and then reissued (on vinyl only) by Bigtime when the group signed with that label for their follow-up, Positively Dumptruck. Essentially a duo of Kirk Swan and Seth Tiven with tag-team drummers, Dumptruck created much more artsy and intense music at this early stage, like R.E.M.'s Chronic Town filtered through early Cure. The music isn't totally removed from their later efforts -- the stylistic building blocks are present, particularly on "Repetition" and "Alive," where the familiar jangle and harmony vocals anticipate the band's later recordings, but a few tracks are unusually abrasive and cold. D Is for Dumptruck is what critics call a promising debut -- the band was on the right track but hadn't yet arrived at its destination. ~ Greg Adams
Though it is most definitely a product of its time (the early '80s) and place (Boston), the debut album by Dumptruck has aged fairly gracefully, as the fine reissue of D Is for Dumptruck attests. Kirk Swan and Seth Tiven created a uniquely cross-pollinated sound that hovered somewhere in the borderland between jangly power pop and experimental art-punk. As you might expect, you'll hear hints of the early Del Fuegos in their subtle country inflections and hints of Mission of Burma in their occasionally dense and chaotic guitar sound (especially on the excellent live bonus tracks). ...

In 2004, Reggae on the River, the annual northern California festival, celebrated its 20th anniversary, and this compilation captures many of the highlights of that year's three-day festival. Thirteen artists are showcased, and one can only pity the person, presumably RAS label head Doctor Dread, forced to pick and choose not just between the artists, but to select a single song to represent each of their sets.
The result, though, is phenomenal, buttressed by the CD's sequencing, that captures the ebb and flow of a live concert. So the set kicks off with Anthony B's superb "Raid the Barn," its sharp cultural message eagerly embraced by the crowd. Culture's "International Herb" goes down a storm, as does Israel Vibration's unity themed "Same Song," while Third World offer up a history lesson on their classic "96 Degrees in the Shade," boasting phenomenal work for lead guitarist Cat Coore.
