Cont.An Un-Released Live Show Rec.At Roxy. 2nd Album
The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass, background vocals); Tommy Ramone (drums). Producers: Tony Bongiovi, T. Erdelyi. Reissue producers: Bill Inglot, Gary Stewart. Recorded at Sundragon, New York, New York and live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California on August 12, 1976. Includes liner notes by Donna Gaines and Arturo Vega. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (Digiprep). Personnel: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Tommy Ramone (drums). Audio Remasterers: Dan Hersch; Bill Inglot. Recording information: Roxy, Hollywood, CA (08/12/1976). Photographers: Bob Gruen; Robert Matheu. Of course the Ramones' second album, Leave Home, is simply more of the same -- 14 songs, including one oldie ("California Sun"), delivered at breakneck speed and concluding in under a half-hour. The Ramones have gotten slightly poppier, occasionally delivering songs like "I Remember You" that are cloaked neither in irony nor seedy rock & roll chic. Still, the biggest impressions are made by the cuts that strongly recall the debut, whether it's the ersatz Beach Boys of "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," the singalong of "Pinhead," or the warped anthems "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" and "Commando." Song for song, it's slightly weaker than its predecessor, but the handful of mediocre cuts speed by so fast that you don't really notice its weaknesses until after it's all over. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Released only months after RAMONES, the Ramones' second album pales slightly in comparison to its stone-classic predecessor--but only slightly. LEAVE HOME contains enough all-time Ramones anthems--"Commando," "Pinhead" (which introduces the legendary "Gabba Gabba Hey" chant), and "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment," to name only three--that it's still an essential document of the New York punk scene. Rhino's remastered 2001 reissue restores the original running order of the album, including "Carbona Not Glue," which was hastily removed from the 1977 vinyl not because it advocated dangerous activities but because the manufacturers of the spot remover Carbona objected. More importantly, this reissue appends a whopping 16 bonus tracks, the entirety of the Ramones' August 1976 Hollywood live debut. Half the tracks don't even hit the two-minute mark--the longest is "Beat on the Brat," an epic 2:36--and the whole thing is over in under half an hour. Years of hardcore punk and the ever-increasing BPMs of underground dance music mean that this stuff doesn't sound as shockingly speedy now as it did at the time; what's surprising is how cheerful and poppy this allegedly transgressive music comes across, and how unexpectedly tight and well-rehearsed the supposedly sloppy band is. As fine as it is -- and it's a really entertaining record, especially in retrospect -- the Ramones' second album, Leave Home, isn't as good as their first, largely because they no longer had the shock of the new. That can't be said of Rhino's 2001 expanded reissue of the record, since it trumps the reissue of Ramones in its bonus material. Where that record had eight bonus cuts, nearly all demos, this has a full 16-track concert recorded live at the Roxy in Hollywood on August 12, 1976. This is a superior bonus since even if it doesn't have the breakneck quality of It's Alive, it's still terrific to hear the Ramones tearing through their set list at their prime. They're not quite as fast or reckless as their reputation would lead you to believe -- as soon as hardcore came around, they started seeming not nearly as fast -- but it's still a spirited, vigorous performance that makes this expanded edition quite special. Of course, in addition to the concert, Leave Home is given a 20-page booklet, filled with full artwork, lyrics, rare photos, and memorabilia, plus notes from Donna Gaines. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Q (8/01, pp.156-7) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Amongst their best work....reiterating themes of solvent abuse and boredom...making more overt references to an idyllic past..." NME (Magazine) (6/23/01, p.41) - 10 out of 10 - "...The most toweringly aggressive, misleadingly primitive, perfectly phrased musical statement ever made....The demos and alternate versions included demonstrate how finely honed every gangly gesture was from the very beginning..." Leave Home Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Excellent sophomore effort If you loved the first album, ou will love their second. More of the same 3-chord fury as their debut album. Must I say it? GET IT!!!! Submitted by Rick (San Francisco, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Johnny Can Play! When this album first came out and we heard the 5 note (count em!) riff for 'California Sun' we knew there was hope for the world- and that Johnny really could play his guitar! 14 tunes of pure noise that drilled into your skull and stayed there forever or at least untill 'Rocket to Russia' was released.
This looks like the CD version to get as it has 'Carbona Not Glue', left out of 'All the Stuff and More" which was the first 2 records combined plus bonus stuff. I don't think you can prove which of the first 3 albums was the best. If you don't have this one (#2), buy it- I command you. Submitted by Doug (Mansfield, OHIO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Just as good as the first. This is just as good as the first Ramones album (which is an incredible masterpiece). This is a bit more poppy than the first but still incredible. You don't have the same experience when you listen to the first one because when you hear the first one for the first time, you can't close your mouth. So when you listen to this, you have gotten used to the Ramones amazingness (I don't think amazingness is even a word, but it describes the Ramones.) Also, this contains 15 live bonus tracks from early live days of the Ramones, when they were raw a fresh scraped knee. Submitted by Micky (Wallingford, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
GABBA GABBA HEY You can't not own this. If your vaguely interested in the Ramones, the first 5 albums are a must-have. This album is among the very very very best. Plus the live bonus tracks are rough raw energetic and a perfect crystalisation of everything the Ramones were about. Submitted by eddtipton (Hereford, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
