Rocket to Russia boasts a cleaner production than its predecessors, which only gives the Ramones' music more force. It helps that the group wrote its finest set of songs for the album. From the mindless, bopping opening of "Cretin Hop" and "Rockaway Beach" to the urban surf rock of "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" and the ridiculous anthem "Teenage Lobotomy," the songs are teeming with irresistibly catchy hooks; even their choice of covers, "Do You Want to Dance?" and "Surfin' Bird," provide more hooks than usual. The Ramones also branch out slightly, adding ballads to the mix. Even with these (relatively) slower songs, the speed of the album never decreases. However, the abundance of hooks and slight variety in tempos makes Rocket to Russia the Ramones' most listenable and enjoyable album -- it doesn't have the revolutionary impact of The Ramones, but it's a better album and one of the finest records of the late '70s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The third of the Ramones' original quartet of albums, 1977's ROCKET TO RUSSIA is actually a big improvement over the slightly disappointing LEAVE HOME, released earlier in 1977. While not as solidly perfect as RAMONES, ROCKET TO RUSSIA contains very little fat and boasts possibly the finest songs in the band's entire repertoire, "Rockaway Beach" and the immortal "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker." "We're a Happy Family" and "Teenage Lobotomy" are only slightly lesser tracks, and the covers of the Trashmen's gloriously silly "Surfin' Bird" and Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance" are conceptually perfect, linking the Ramones neatly with their garage rock and bubblegum roots. The bonus tracks on the 2001 Rhino reissue are less revelatory than the 1976 concert contained on the LEAVE HOME reissue, a motley but entertaining collection of demos, single mixes and one B-side, "It's a Long Way Back to Germany," but this disc's carefully remastered sound makes it sound better than all previous incarnations of the album, highlighting the extent to which the cleaner production complements the group's poppier, slightly more complex new songs. There aren't many bonus tracks -- only five -- on Rhino's 2001 expanded edition of the Ramones' third album, Rocket to Russia, but it doesn't really matter because the album itself is so good and the presentation is so fine. Like the other editions in Rhino's Ramones reissue series, this has a terrific booklet with the original artwork, full lyrics, plenty of photos, and great notes (this time from Legs McNeil). And while the bonus tracks are a little slight -- single versions of "I Don't Care" and "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" are nice to have but not drastically different than the album versions, while a previously unreleased version of "Needles & Pins" is charming but rather anemic -- the demo of the non-LP "Slug" is really excellent (but probably too pop for the Ramones in 1977) and it's good to have the U.K. B-side "It's a Long Way Back to Germany" along for the ride. Apart from those two songs, these bonus tracks don't pack the punch of the full concert on Leave Home, nor do they have the historic importance of the tracks on Ramones. But that's minor quibbling, since the music is good, the pRolling Stone (12/11/03, p.105) - Ranked #105 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "[T]heir first true studio triumph, an exuberant, polished bottling of the CBGB-stage napalm of RAMONES and LEAVE HOME..." Ramones Rocket To Russia Songs Rocket To Russia Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Ramones at their best, I can't say it any better! Anyone new to the Ramones this is about the best place to start, though "Ramones", "Leave Home" and "Road to Ruin" are great too. Many if not most of their best known songs are on here. Along with punk Rocket to Russia is in my view one of the best rock albums in general ever made. Why they didn't make Gold or Platinum with this I will never know. And absolutely NO fillers! | | Fruit Here For Days CD (2001)
Rocket To Russia album
$14.05 Over the years, countless musicians have asserted that they hate being categorized. But categories do serve a useful purpose -- how else are marketing people going to do their jobs? That said, categories don't always do artists justice. Take Fruit, for example. Here for Days could easily be categorized as alternative pop/rock or adult alternative -- and if the use of those terms enables the all-female Australian band to sell more CDs, that isn't a bad thing. But because Fruit (which shouldn't be confused with other acts that have used that name) has been influenced by such a variety of styles, those terms don't seem to fully do the quintet justice. Here for Days, which was produced in England by Paul Gomersall, is far from predictable. Some of Fruit's pop/rock is very folk-influenced and has been compared to the Indigo Girls, but other times, the Aussies favor a jazzy, soul-tinged approach that sort of reminds you of Swing Out Sister. And much to its credit, Fruit always has a distinctive, recognizable sound regardless of whether it is going in a folk-influenced direction or more of a jazzy direction. The outfit has three very capable lead vocalists to choose from (Mel Watson, Susie Keynes and Sam Lohs), and whoever ends up taking the lead vocals on a particular song, Fruit is always ready to provide an abundance of delicious, gorgeous harmonies. If the rich melodies and hooks win you over in the first place, the harmonies give you even more reason to stick around. So however you categorize Here for Days, this is an excellent, chance-taking effort that deserves a great deal of attention. ~ Alex Henderson
Exquisite Harmonies, High EnergyAustralian sensation, FRUIT are on their way to becoming one of the hottest new music exports from Down Under. With 3 frontline women - Susie Keynes, Sam Lohs and Mel Watson, 2 wielding electric and acoustic guitars and the other commanding an arsenal of horns. Each of them sings, writes and locks seamlessly to the other. It's a vocal blend reminiscent of the great harmonisers of our time. Add to this collaboration the snap lock brotherly groove of the rhythm section: Yanya Boston's gutsy, rhythmic passion on drums, Brian Ruiz's groove-laden bass and two more velvet voices. That is Fruit. ...

Rocket To Russia MP3 Album
$12.65 Original score composed by Jack Johnson. As well as being a notable singer/songwriter with a growing legion of fans behind him, Jack Johnson occasionally finds himself behind a film camera, too. Perhaps due to his incredible success in 2002, Johnson has released the soundtrack to his The September Sessions, featuring himself as well as a number of his like-minded musician friends. Far and away the nicest tracks here, though, are those by Johnson. His earnest voice and gentle guitar playing are truly mesmerizing, even when covering Jimmy Buffett's ...

Rocket To Russia music CDs
$15.15 The Story of Rider on the RimAs TEXAS was being dreamed about in the minds of Margaret Harper, William and Margaret Moore and others, one of the images that kept finding its way into the conversations was that of the lone cowboy, standing solitary against the huge expanse of panhandle sky. It wasn’t much of a leap of imagination to envision that cowboy silhoutted against an evening sky, high atop the cliff wall that isthe backdrop for the Pioneer Amphitheatre. And so, the most iconic moment in American outdoor drama was born. 45 years later, when TEXAS Executive Director Bill Anderson asked me why I had never written a song for the amphitheater, I was shocked to find that I had no answer. It never occurred to me that a place which honors so many, would need honoring itself. But, of course, it does. And when I started thinking about what this place and this show have meant to me and to countless others, the image which came immediately to mind was the soaring symbol of “the cliff rider”. I can’t count the number of nights I’ve stood looking at that image, yet it never fails to quicken my heart a beat or two. The rider pictured on our cover, David Schuette, was a friend of mine. Not only a fine actor, but a true cowboy, “Schuette” inspired everyone he met, both personally and professionally. To him and the dozens of other fearless men and women who braved dark, unmarked trails, rock slides, and recalcitrant mounts to live forever in our hearts as a symbol of strength, hope, courage and pride - this song and this CD are dedicated. Steve Hilton TEXAS, 2008---------------------About \"TEXAS\"Although known universally simply as “TEXAS”, the official name of the best attended outdoor drama in the United States is the TEXAS Musical Drama. Not only is the word “Music” central to the show’s name, but ...
