Check It Out album
$15.05 Orchestral and choral arrangements of rock songs have been a curious subgenre ever since the mid-'60s when Andrew Loog Oldham arranged The Rolling Stones Songbook for syrupy strings, but The Kinks Choral Collection stands apart from the pack for the simple reason that it's not the project of some associate or admirer, but rather chief Kink Ray Davies. His very presence as arranger and lead vocal means The Kinks Choral ...

Herb Alpert was still using an array of SoCal studio all-stars as his Tijuana Brass when South of the Border (1964) began to restore the combo's good name after the modest Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Vol. 2 (1963) failed to ignite a fire in listener's ears. | | Angelyna Martinez Labor Of Love CD (2005)
Check It Out CD music
$15.19 Club star Angelyna Martinez takes a crack at going into solo recordings here with mixed results. The album is a collection of standards in the extreme. Angelyna can swing, she can hop, she can croon. Throughout it all though, despite some excellent phrasing and passion, her voice is small and light. As a result, it's hard to take some of the bits seriously. "Fever" comes across as almost a talent-show entry with the band holding back and leaving an immature-sounding Martinez up front. When the band pulls in fully though, and she isn't attempting to find her way into Eartha Kitt-style sexiness, Martinez can pull off some very nice pieces. It's hit and miss throughout, largely due simply to the tone of her voice. Give it a try, if for no other reason than the nice rendition of "Pure Imagination" (think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). ~ Adam Greenberg
