| | Toby Dammit Top Dollar CD Toby Dammit Discography of CDs
Having worked with the innovative likes of Swans and Iggy Pop, drummer Larry Mullins uses the alias Toby Dammit on Top Dollar to milk his own inspirations. Those astute in cinema 101 or just pop culture in general might know that Toby Dammit is the name of a darkly stylish cult Federico Fellini short film starring Terence Stamp. On more than a few of Top Dollar's tracks, Toby Dammit lives up to the spirit of Fellini's surreal adventure. Mullins frames the entire album with the exhilarating and maddening sounds of a percussion section turned evil. Noisy samples of voices, drag races, sirens, and other found sounds blend in with freakout drum solos, trippy and skittering grooves, and staccato percussion in creating twisted chill-out music best suited for hyperactive individuals. Coming across at different times like a mad mix of Luke Vibert's humorous sci-fi electronica, the jazzy spy music drum'n'bass of Squarepusher, and some sort of tropical fusion orchestra, Top Dollar never fails in its exuberance or its eclectic charm. Mullins is more than just an adrenaline junky, though, as he knows when to take things down a notch, perhaps best witnessed in the Seefeel-meets-Neotropic-meets-Miles Davis experimentation of "Malmö Nocturne (Månsson's Theme)." If a few of the tracks have the feel of extended intros and outros, there's still enough interesting sonic trickery going on that the album could hardly be considered dull. Noisy, intelligent, and chugging along to the beat of its own drum, Top Dollar is certainly one fascinating journey. ~ Tim DiGravina

| | Minutemen Double Nickels On The Dime CD (1984)
Top Dollar album
$13.69 The CD reissue of DOUBLE NICKELS ON A DIME includes 43 songs. Two songs have been deleted from the original LP to insure playback on all CD players.
Principally recorded at Radio Tokyo, Venice, California in November 1983 and April 1984. Originally issued as a 2-LP set.
This sprawling double-length release is the Minutemen's undisputed high-water mark, and one of the seminal platters of the post-punk, pre-grunge years. It perfectly encapsulates the strengths shown in their early works, then ups the ante. DOUBLE NICKELS runs the gamut from hardcore funk and honky-tonk to vaguely avant-garde experimentation, jazzy workouts, and a Steely Dan cover.
The level of songwriting has also been turned up several notches. The less-is-more aesthetic is still in effect--most songs last two minutes or so, and the essential elements of scratchy funk guitar and a hard and nimble rhythm section remain. But the canvas is more varied than before, with moments of oddball humor, songs about indoor plumbing, bizarro instrumentals, bits of gentle acoustic guitar. The group plays ...
| | Sunnyside Cafe Series: Cafe Mundo/An Electro World Experience CD (2004)
Top Dollar CD music
$13.59 "An Electro World Experience," as this album is subtitled, can mean virtually anything, from chillout to funk, electronica to world, and the compilers take the definition liberally. There's definitely plenty of world music, running the gamut from the chilled (Hamid Baroudi with the endearing "Trance Dance" in a remix) to the decidedly funky (pulling out the old Manu Dibango chestnut "Soul Makossa"). The emphasis seems to be on the continent of Africa, but it does drift further afield, taking in Latin sounds with Bajofondo Tango Club and even the Asian steppes with an interesting Huun-Huur-Tu remix. But it dives outside world music at the close, into the ...
| | Saw Mill Man CD (2005)
Top Dollar music CDs
$12.79 It's not often that a 79 year old is still making records, let alone issuing his first ever. But that's precisely what country guitar picker/singer Cast King has done, with 2005's Saw Mill Man. Cast King's story is an interesting one -- hailing from Old Sand Mountain, AL, King was "discovered" when a gentleman named Matt Downer began recording old-time musicians plucking away at his grandfather's house. At the behest of others, this led to Downer tracking down King (who had supposedly recorded a few songs for Sun Records way back when, before disappearing), and recording commenced at King's house, with only a four-track tape and MiniDisc recorder present. It's commonplace to compare any new country musician to Johnny Cash, but there are certainly some musical parallels between Cash and King here -- especially both artist's ...
| | Chachi Jones Dymaxion Daydream CD (2006)
Top Dollar songs
$12.15 Not your typical electro artist, Chachi Jones (aka Donald Bell) resides in the spaces between the genre's sub-stratums, his music slipping amidst the grooves of innovative experimentation, ambient sound scapes, and the rhythm driven. And it's those rhythms that define Dymaxion Daydream, even more so than Jones' debut album, 2003's Claustrophilia. They are often times deliberately at odds with the ethereal dreamscapes he conjures up, as Jones unleashes stuttering hip-hop beats, funky rhythms, jungle-fied drum patterns, and in some places, beats seemingly built out of industrial-lite tools. Add scratching effects, subtle vocal ...
| | Pegasus Project Word Of Mouth CD (2000)
Top Dollar album
$15.19 Pegasus Project utilizes the marvels of modern technology with the power of ancient instruments to create an eclectic blend of new age, smooth jazz, and world beat music. When most people hear the name Pegasus, they think of the flying horse from Greek mythology. Others know it as the celestial constellation which bears the same name. The word Pegasus also means "poetic inspiration". It was this lesser known definition that inspired the name - Pegasus Project. Franklin Spicer, keyboardist/percussionist/songwriter/producer, has long envisioned a merging of modern music with the power of global rhythms and ancient instruments. With Valerie Ford's embracing vocals and soulful guitar playing, Pegasus Project creates an eclectic blend of new age, smooth jazz, and world beat music.Their debut CD is entitled Word of Mouth. Franklin clarifies, "If people are truly affected by art they will want to tell others. With this project we're focusing on what we want to say musically, not what we think will sell, but what we hope will deeply affect other people in a positive way. We use what we call 'The goose bump factor': if the energy is there -- and the music gives us chills -- we know other people will react to it as well."The opening song Pachamama, an Incan word which means "Mother Earth," was inspired by a Peruvian prayer. The song features ...
