From their inception, Kansas had been working on a combination of American heavy rock and UK prog rock. Their aesthetic and commercial peak in 1976-'77 found them achieving the perfect synthesis of these elements, first on LEFTOVERTURE and then on POINT OF KNOW RETURN. While the latter was somewhat more concise and accessible, LEFTOVERTURE contains what is inarguably the Midwestern band's signature song, "Carry On, My Wayward Son," an irresistible riff-fest that channels everything from Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and would make Kansas rock-radio denizens for decades to come. On many of the other tracks, the band's proggier elements come to the fore, with elegant piano, elaborate synthesizer, and death-defying shifts in meter and dynamics, but the whole is delivered with a greater conceptual concision than Kansas had previously managed.

Remastered all time great classic rock album. I absolutely love this album ! I've had it on vinyl for 26 years & had the cd for over 15 years & it's in my top 5 favourite albums of all time. The remaster was purchased mainly for enhanced sleeve notes & 2 bonus tracks; "Carry on Wayward Son" & "Cheyenne Anthem" - both previously unreleased live tracks. Well worth having for die hard Kansas fans. Pity Epic/Legacy couldn't cram any more onto the disc as at just over 55 minutes, it's still on the short side but well worth it for the enhanced remastering by original producer Jeff Glixman.
An essential purchase ! Submitted by nigelgains (Macclesfield, Cheshire, U.K.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

A Classic Masterpiece Kansas reinvented progrssive rock with this Classic Album. Having seen them Live in 1978, this Album still remains in my Collection Today. Although Hugely Well Known in the States, Unfortunately Kansas were little recognized in the UK at the time I saw them Live one Tuesday Evening at the Manchester Apollo Theatre, the Sparse Audience that night of Maybe 100 no more, were there to see the Support Band Cheap Trick, and not Kansas, I felt Deeply for the members of Kansas, especially, Robby Steinhardt, who seemed to be bemused at the lack of an Audience, and the look on his face asked the Question, why were they even playing to such a small crowd. | | Kansas Point Of Know Return CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Leftoverture
$7.59 The high point of Kansas's long career, 1977's POINT OF KNOW RETURN found the American heartlanders finally striking the perfect balance between complex prog-rock, hard-hitting heavy guitar work, and crafty pop sensibilities. This is perhaps best exemplified by the title cut, a sparkling tune full of jaunty interaction between piano and violin that moves unerringly through ...

| | England Dan Nights Are Forever CD (1976)
Leftoverture
$9.69 Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece to the Parker McGee album recorded around the same time, on the same label, with pretty much the same musicians. Producer Kyle Lehning has the sounds so similar ...

| | Three Inches Of Blood Battlecry Under A Winter Sun CD (2003) Bonus Tracks
Leftoverture
$11.45 Canada's Three Inches of Blood throw their lot into the "shameless heavy metal retread" sweepstakes with the suitably titled Battlecry Under a Winter Sun and a simple motto: "Let metal be your master!" With song titles like "Ride Darkhorse, Ride," "Destroy the Orcs," and "Heir to the Chaos Throne," there's no disguising the group's humongous debt to Ronnie James Dio's school of sword and sorcery lyrics. And with their piles and piles of galloping, staccato riffs, these and album highlights such as "Headwaters of the River Blood," "Curse of the Lighthouse Keeper," and the absolutely hysterical "Balls of Ice" also drink liberally from the fountain of Iron Maiden -- even if they avoid the metal legends' epic approach to songwriting in order to wrap up in two or three minutes. This, as it turns out, works to Three Inches of Blood's advantage, as the absence of excess clutter allows for a fresh feeling of renewal throughout. Conversely, the band's heartfelt dedication to this often maligned and ridiculed genre might rub some listeners as being facetious, requiring a very open mind to stomach the likes of "Journey to the Promisedland" -- a dramatic interlude composed of acoustic guitar and chanted "ooh"s and "aah"s. Speaking of vocals, if there's anything truly unique about Three Inches of Blood, it's their use of not one, but two vocalists -- one singing piercing semioperatic melodies à la Rob Halford, the other shrieking like a death metal demon. ...
