In 1994, keyboardist Michael Hoppé and flutist Tim Wheater won accolades for their album The Yearning, which garnered CD Review's CD of the Year honors. For Wind Songs, the duo set the musical key to suit Wheater's many ethnic flutes, then improvised with "no previous rehearsing or mindset." The album opens with "Between Cave and Cloud"; mountains quake and skies shudder in extended Oms, a gently mournful lament for the Earth. Wheater switches from Native American to silver flute for "Silence of the Stars," as sleepy-eyed and seductive as Scheherazade; sparkling chimes signal outbursts of shooting stars, then a melody strokes with infinite tenderness. "Stray Bird" moves up in tone with its greener feeling, like the bursting of an Irish spring. Most cuts include songs from animals -- eagle cries, chattering squirrels -- while "On Wings of Sleep" lulls with a gentle brook. The tone throughout is like a nocturne: steady heartbeat, unfettered breathing, alert to reverence. Here, a troubled soul can find peace in the night. Richard Burmer added subtle synthesizer magic to the final mix. ~ Carol Wright

$4.75 Somewhere between techno and new age, Vampire's Lair: Blood Thirsty Beats for Halloween delivers the damaged goods. The usual moans, maniacal guffaws, and rustling chains are all here and wrapped in a mid-'90s electronic monster suit. In "Vampire Song," the mantra "I love your face/I like your skin/I need your blood" is repeated over what sounds like a Depeche Mode song. In "Killing Screams," water drips and humans suffer, writhing amidst the factory-preset keyboard carnage. "Vampire Dance" begins with an unfortunate victim pleading with his vampire to cease this unprovoked attack before launching into an undead funk jam. While the Halloween overachievers with the cool yard may rule the night, the introverted consumer ...

| | Luiz Bonfa Solo In Rio 1959 CD (2005)
Wind Songs music CDs
$13.55 Solo in Rio 1959 stands as a classic in the massive Luiz Bonfa catalog. Originally issued on the Cook label -- named for its owner, famed audio engineer Emory Cook -- it remained a favorite of the guitarist's throughout his lifetime. The Emory Cook Collection is housed and managed by the Smithsonian and as such, Folkways is able to re-release this masterpiece on CD with many added treasures -- there is an additional half-hour of music on the CD. The original featured 17 cuts. The new version contains 32, including an early version of "Samba de Orfeu." While it is true that it is the guitarist and composer's most famous composition and he recorded it many times, this is the only one on solo guitar. This is the first time it appears anywhere. Also included are two versions of the celebrated "Manha de Carnaval." The second read is a more up-tempo and shorter version that is breathless in its beauty. Other well-known Bonfa compositions that have alternates here are "Perdido de Amor," "Sambolero," "Quebra Maer," and "Luzes do Rio." Another ...
