| | Sleeping Bag Records Greatest Rap Hits CD
It may have taken a frustrating amount of time for this collection to appear, but it's been worth the wait. Nearly two decades after the original release of these songs, the defunct Sleeing Bag label's gold mine of old school rap classics finally sees a CD release. Featuring 15 classics by pioneers such as Mantronix, Just-Ice, Nice & Smooth, EPMD, and T La Rock, Sleeping Bag Records Greatest Rap Hits showcases the storied New York label's formative sound, a sound which shaped countless late-'80s and early-'90s East Coast MCs and producers. Granted, these songs no doubt sound dated and are a little stiff to contemporary ears, but their historical importance is undeniable. ~ Jason Birchmeier

$10.49 It may not be a very popular idea anymore, but the fact is that MC Hammer made some of the biggest and catchiest rap music ever to break into the mainstream. His hard-edged delivery was really one of the first to break out of the slow and deliberate pattern that previous successes like Run-D.M.C. and LL Cool J had utilized. Along with Public Enemy, N.W.A., and a few others, he took the old-school style of rap and updated it slightly without taking it to the next step à la A Tribe Called Quest. Instead, he took what was a hot formula at the time, found some excellent beats and tracks, and crafted the intense juggernaut Please Hammer, Don't Hurt ...
| | Life Is...Too Short CD (1988)
Sleeping Bag Records Greatest Rap Hits music CDs
$8.99 Too Short never had the skills or technique of LL Cool J or Big Daddy Kane, but what the Oakland rapper lacks in technique, he's always more than made up for with irresistible, '70s-inspired funk grooves that simply won't quit. When Short -- after enjoying a small cult following for a few years in Northern California -- joined a major label with Life Is...Too Short's predecessor, Born to Mack, too many East Coast MCs were inundating hip-hop with clichéd tracks consisting of only James Brown samples and a drum machine. Too Short, however, presented an attractive alternative with highly melodic, danceable tracks that made no secret of his love of '70s funk heroes like Parliament, the Ohio Players, and Cameo. This CD's X-rated, sexually explicit lyrics received their share of vehement criticism, and the MC responded that Too Short is an outrageous character who shouldn't be taken too seriously. Be that as it may, his commanding reflection on the drug plague, "City ...

| | Nancy Wilson Greatest Hits CD (1999)
Sleeping Bag Records Greatest Rap Hits album
$7.59 "Greatest Hits"? I beg to differ. This does, to be sure, emphasize her most well-known material from the mid-'80s to 1997, when she was recording for Columbia. The thing is, Wilson had a long pre-Columbia career, and did her best -- and best-known -- hits for Capitol in the 1960s. By the time she got to Columbia, she was singing treacly urban contemporary pop, albeit with better pipes than most urban contemporary singers. That's what's heard on most of this collection, which includes four minor R&B hits she had in 1989 and 1994 (minor for sure, none of them got past number 64). The gap between her Columbia era and her Capitol one is emphasized, no doubt unintentionally, by the inclusion of two early '60s cuts on Capitol, one of which ("Save Your Love for Me," a duet with Cannonball Adderley) got to number 11 on the R&B charts in 1962. ~ Richie Unterberger
A "greatest hits" album, a concept pioneered by Columbia Records, is usually thought of as a compilation containing the single recordings by an artist that scored on the charts. In that sense, one might wonder ...

$20.95 The jewel of Sweden, this is Robyn's 1999 album, which includes "Electri" and "Healthy Love."
