Shortly after acclaimed New York noise trio Unsane ditched camp at the end of 1999, Dave Curran, along with the assistance of former Kill Van Kull and Glazed Baby members, founded the J.J. Paradise Players Club. No surprise, then, that this outfit borrows sonically from the parent bands -- particularly Unsane, and especially the propensity for volume at all costs. Curran, who wielded bass with his previous band, does precisely the same here, with a damaging low-end attack. Wine Cooler Blowout is a rhythmically dense album, utilizing the massive, wall of sound approach favored by the majority of noise rock outfits, as well a wash of damaging guitar (not unlike the Entombed -- at least on their later material). Though there is tremendous collective experience among this quartet, being seasoned tour veterans of the underground circuit, Wine Cooler Blowout, like its EP predecessor, is a fairly average affair. Sure, the rhythm section work together seamlessly, and that is the most salient quality of these songs, but the riffs are tepid. ~ Patrick Kennedy

Wine Cooler Blowout album
$9.55 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it ...
| | Jimmy Buffett Buffet Hotel CD (2009)
Wine Cooler Blowout CD music
$9.74 Since Jimmy Buffett never leaves his comfort zone, it's hard to call 2009's Buffet Hotel a return to roots but, in a way, it is. Discounting the mock rap on "Turn Up the Heat and Chill the Rosé," this album doesn't even have the lingering country and reggae flavors that seasoned 2006's Take the Weather with You, with all of the songs riding a cool, mellow country-rock wave, the kind that has been his stock-in-trade since the `70s. There's a difference between being part of a tradition and being stuck in the past and Buffett is surely in the ...
| | Mark Knopfler Get Lucky CD (2009)
Wine Cooler Blowout music CDs
$15.65 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire ...
| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CD (2009)
Wine Cooler Blowout songs
$8.79 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything ...

| | Stereo MC's Deep Down & Dirty CD (2001) (Import) United Kingdom
Wine Cooler Blowout CD music
$11.79 In 2001, several years after any listeners could've expected a follow-up to 1992's Connected, Stereo MC's finally delivered with Deep Down & Dirty. It's a tribute to how far ahead of the curve Stereo MC's were ten years earlier that Deep Down & Dirty never strays far from the spirit of Connected, but still sounds perfectly up-to-date for 2001. It's clear the productions are more mature and more complex, but they still plumb the depths of deep-groove beatbox funk, with nods to soul-jazz and gospel. Still tossing out lines with the half-assed cool of Shaun Ryder or Ian Brown, frontman Rob Birch doesn't rap quite as much as he used to (that's a good thing), and the productions are a tad more down-tempo and dubby than when the band was at its most clubbed-up in the early '90s. The title-track opener sets things off in fine fashion, working a stuttered mid-tempo groove with split-second snippets from the horn section and a full-throttle ...
