| | Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts From The British Empire & Beyond 1964-1969 CD (7 Customer Reviews)
After the immense success of the original and very American Nuggets box, Rhino was all too happy to scan the remainder of the globe for further forays in garage rock obscurity. Covering the nether regions of 1964-'69, Nuggets II is a virtually hitless, yet absolutely priceless, collection of mod, psychedelic, British R&B, freakbeat, twee-pop, and countless other momentary genres. We're talkin' another 4 discs of treasures from the underground, including all the usual extras: a massive 100-page book with new essays from Bomp editor Greg Shaw and Nuggets II producers Alec Palao and Gary Stewart, plus complete track info by Ugly Things editor Mike Stax, and a lorry-load of rare pix. This Rhino Records package includes 4 CD's in jewel boxes, a color booklet in 6 x 12 inch box.
Compilation producers: Gary Stewart, Alec Palao. Includes an 100-page booklet, including liner notes by Gary Stewart, Greg Shaw, Alec Palao & Mike Stax. Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts From The British Empire & Beyond 1964-1969 Music Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Impressive and hilarious I have the original Nuggets collection (American bands) and loved the info in the booklet about as much as the music. The same with Nuggets 2. The back stories are truly amazing and the sound quality remarkable. Perhaps George Martin rubbed off on quite a few other producers because the sound seems alittle less rough and garagey than the American compilation. By and large I would say more poppy.
Regardless, there is a real emphasis on harmony and melody, much more so than #1. By the same token, the guitarwork is truly mindblowing- alot of backwards loops and effects. This stuff is alot more polished than what the Wailers or the Count 5 were doing. It's still great fun and a good way to introduce yourself to great bands like The Pretty Things, and the Move.
Well worth the money. Submitted by hammer (Los Angeles CA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great set of CD's. A lot of this stuff would be very hard to find on a .45 or even an album. This is well worth the money if want some truly great music that you do not ever hear on the radio. Submitted by byron (Hillsboro, KS USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nuggets II ate my brain. My only complaint about this set is how often I end up with one or another or another of the selections stuck in my head for the whole day. Right now it's "Real Crazy Apartment" (Winston's Fumbs). Sometimes it's "Save My Soul" (Wimple Winch); sometimes it's "Get Down From The Tree" (The Matadors); sometimes it's "Path Through The Forest" (The Factory); sometimes it's "Touch" (The Outsiders -- bless you Wally); et cetera. Come to think of it, this isn't really a complaint after all, niet waar?! Real crazy apartment (yeah, yeah, yeah), real crazy apartment (yeah, yeah, yeah), real crazy apartment (yeah, yeah, yeah)... Mindblowing Forgotten Music! Being the owner of the original Nuggets on vinyl and the 4 CD boxed set I could not wait for this set to be played and man was not let down. From the first track to the very last I enjoyed every one of them. The many artists that featured in this set and were at the time unknown but to rise to fame in the seventies was a revelation. Those guys at Rhino really done their homework. The booklet alone must be worth the price for the information on the groups alone. This was the sort of music I tried to get growing up in the sixties but eluded me, Now I can relive those days and be happy. BUY IT. Submitted by mail (Milton Keynes, United Kingdom.)
