A wild and tangled crime adventure involving gangsters, Irish gypsies, and a dog that can't stop swallowing things, SNATCH is both hilarious and action-packed. Jewel thief Franky Four Fingers (Benicio Del Toro) is in London en route to New York, where he will deliver an 86-karat diamond to his boss, Avi (Dennis Farina). A compulsive gambler, Franky is tempted into an illegal boxing scam, becoming the unwitting suspect in a robbery committed by bumbling pawnshop owners Vinny (Robbie Gee), Sol (Lennie James), and their oaf-of-a-driver, Tyrone (Ade). Meanwhile, novice boxing promoter Turkish (Jason Statham), and his dim-witted partner, Tommy (Stephen Graham), move into the "big time" with twisted crime boss, Brick Top (Alan Ford), and Mickey, a mumbling, unhinged Irish gypsy boxer (Brad Pitt). Thrown into the proceedings are killers Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones) and Boris the Blade (Rade Sherbedgia). A stylized work with a gritty urban soundtrack and a cast of intricately developed characters, SNATCH delivers superb and witty dialogue while depicting one of the more zany, complex diamond heists ever portrayed in film.

Theatrical release: August 23, 2000 (U.K.); January 19, 2001, (U.S.). The budget for SNATCH was only $6 million. Shot in London, with principal photography for the film beginning in October of 1999. After Guy Ritchie's first feature, LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS, Brad Pitt phoned the director and asked to be in his next movie. Pitt, who normally gets paid around $20 million for a film, agreed to a much smaller fee and the same trailer as the other actors. "He was one of the lads right from the start," said Ritchie about Pitt, "a top boy who doesn't mince around." Pitt's character, Mickey, was originally supposed to be a huge, overweight Irishman, but the part was altered somewhat when he signed on to the film. On the set, Ritchie devised a "fine system" to keep a tight ship: fining cast and crew for everything from having mobile phones, arriving late, taking naps during shooting, to being "cheeky" and unfunny, and moaning. "Unfortunately, I was one of the ones who suffered the most," said Ritchie of his system. Ritchie has said that casting was key: "The roles needed coarseness as well as credibility. It's no good getting Shakespearean actors to play violent cockney gang members." Scottish actor Ewan Bremner makes a cameo as Mullet. British electronica artist Goldie appears briefly as Lincoln. The film was originally titled DIAMONDS, but the title was taken by another film before production began, so Ritchie had to change it to SNATCH. The Austin Chronicle named SNATCH one of the 10 best films of 2000.

4 stars Pitt, Farina in fine form
"Snatch" is director Guy Ritchie's best effort to date. Brad Pitt (as Mickey One Punch) and Dennis Farina (as Avi) head a terrific cast. Alan Ford is priceless as ultrathug Brick Top and Jason Statham as his opposite number, Turkish. And let's not forget a tremendous soundtrack, with cuts by Oasis, Massive Attack, the Stranglers and Mirwais.

Joel and Ethan Coen transport Homer's ODYSSEY to the depression-era South in the silly, fun comedy O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson star as three escaped fugitives on the run in Mississippi. Their adventures through the barren landscape includes run-ins with a soothsayer, a trio of Sirens, a Bible-salesman Cyclops, as well as other archetypes from Southern folklore and pop-culture including a young blues musician, the Klan, and bank robber Baby Face Nelson. Soon they are caught up in a vicious gubernatorial campaign that would make Huey Long proud. The Coen brothers mix in a host of cinematic references in O BROTHER, including SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS, COOL HAND LUKE, I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG, and even dashes of the Three Stooges. The soundtrack of folk ballads, yodeling traditionals, Delta blues, ...

Known for making films about familial relationships, director Ang Lee surprised everyone with his martial arts epic CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. Based on a novel by Wang Du Lu, CROUCHING TIGER starts with the revenge plot common in the wuxia stories that Lee loved as a child, then adds a feminist twist. Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) is a legendary martial artist who has decided to pass on his sword, the Green Destiny, to a friend. Soon afterward, the sword is stolen by a masked female, setting in motion events that test the bonds of family, love, duty, and sisterhood. Chow appears with three generations of female stars: Cheng Pei Pei, a 1960s action heroine; Michelle Yeoh, the beauty queen turned 1980s action goddess; ...

The first of three prequels to George Lucas's celebrated STAR WARS films, EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE is set some 30 years before the original STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE in the era of the Republic. Naboo, a peaceful planet governed by the young but wise Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman), is being threatened by the corrupt Trade Federation, puppets of an evil Sith lord and his terrifying apprentice, Darth Maul (Ray Park). Jedi knights Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor, performing an amazing vocal imitation of Alec Guinness, the older Obi-Wan) are called on to intervene in the trade disputes. Along the way, they acquire an apprentice of their own in the form of young prodigy Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), or as STAR WARS fans know him, the future Darth Vader. They also encounter Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best), a goofy, lizardlike creature who has been banished from his underwater world for clumsiness. When the Trade Federation ...

A brutally comic tale about a group of London friends who find themselves deep in debt to an East End tough, LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS is quick-paced, stylized, and highly entertaining. In his debut feature film, director-writer Guy Ritchie weaves a tangled web of shady, blithely eccentric characters and several storylines, all of them coming together in a gleeful explosion of murder and mayhem. When streetwise charmer Eddy (Nick Moran), the son of steely bar owner JD (Sting), botches a gambling scheme with his dad's nemesis, porn king Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarty), he's got one week to come up with 500,000 pounds or he loses his fingers--and so do his friends Tom (Jason Flemyng), Bacon (Jason Statham), and Soap (Dexter Fletcher). While the pals scheme to make the money, Harry indulges his penchant for valuable ...

Picking up where the first film left off, Peter Jackson's THE TWO TOWERS throws the remaining members of the Fellowship into the scattered chaos of Middle-earth, now fully under siege by the forces of Sauron. While Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) journey to the dreaded Mordor, Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) are held captive by orcs, and Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) search for their abducted companions. Soon Frodo and Sam are joined by the sulking and duplicitous Gollum (portrayed by the voice and motion-captured acting of Andy Serkis), who becomes their guide through the barren lands leading to Mount Doom. Meanwhile Merry and Pippin encounter the looming Treebeard (voiced by Rhys-Davies) and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli find themselves in the land of Rohan, accompanied by an old friend. As the tale continues, each scenario becomes more perilous, and fierce battles erupt at both Isengard, home of the treacherous Saruman (Christopher Lee), and the massive Helm's ...

A remake of an older anime series of the same name, SHADOW SKILL updates its predecessor's basic action/fantasy premise with a much lighter tone. In the kingdom of Kuruda, the mighty band of martial-arts warriors known as the Sevalle are king. While young Gau dreams of one day joining the group's hallowed ranks, his older sister, Elle, is already a highly skilled Sevalle member. The trouble is that Elle is a hard-drinking party girl who would rather engage in booze-fueled antics than train her younger brother in the Sevalle's mystic ways. Produced by the acclaimed animation studio DEEN, the high-octane anime series continues with this collection of episodes 5-8. Hulems, Watchers, and Divas, oh my! On the road to Julianess, surprises wait behind every hilltop, from ...
