Since Pike is the wealthy and shy heir to a beer fortune, he seems like the perfect target for one of Jean's cons, but as she deceives him she finds herself falling in love. | | Big Heat DVD (1953) Black & White; Dubbed; Subtitled
Lady Eve review
$15.19 THE BIG HEAT, Fritz Lang's most celebrated American film, is a chilling and violent tale of corruption, vengeance, and loss. Dave Bannion, played by distinguished Film Noir actor Glenn Ford, is an upright but unscrupulous cop on the trail of a vicious gang he suspects holds power over the police force. Bannion is tipped off after a colleague's suicide and his fellow officers' suspicious silence lead him to believe that they are on the gangsters' payroll. When a bomb meant for him kills his wife instead, Bannion becomes a furious force of vengeance and justice, aided along the way by the gangster's spurned girlfriend Debbie (Gloria Grahame). As Bannion and Debbie fall further and further into the Gangland's insidious and brutal trap, they must use any means necessary (including murder) to get to the truth. The violence comes suddenly and unrelentingly, as Lang explodes the stripped down story with economic yet forceful cinematography and editing, and gritty yet emotionally gripping performances from Ford and Grahame.

| | M*A*S*H DVD (1970) Widescreen
Lady Eve video
$10.49 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a heavy amount of zooming, and a bold combination of frank subject matter with cynical humor--Altman immediately vaulted himself to Hollywood's upper ranks. Based on the novel by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H follows a group of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital officers as they perform surgery and pass the time just miles from the front lines of the Korean conflict. Led by sardonic captains "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and "Trapper" John McIntyre (Elliott Gould), the film has the feel of an absurd three-ring circus. Other characters include the uptight nurse "Hot Lips" O'Houlihan (Sally Kellerman), the confused Major Frank Burns (Robert Duvall), the troubled Captain "Painless" Waldowski (John Shuck), and the simpleminded Captain "Duke" Forrest (Tom Skerritt). Altman's decision to present his film as a series of loosely connected vignettes rather than a traditionally unfolding narrative perfectly captures the freewheeling spirit so unique to early-'70s cinema.

| | Scotland, Pa DVD (2002)
Lady Eve movie DVD
$9.79 Yahtzee, chicken nuggets, weed-smoking clairvoyant hippies, Shakespearean refrains, and jamming rock songs by Bad Company are some of the key elements of director Billy Morrissette's ode to MACBETH and early 1970s small town America. A comic interpretation of the William Shakespeare classic, SCOTLAND, PA tells the story of a fast food restaurant called McBeth's, an innovative establishment that offers drive-through service. However, the success of the restaurant's young owners, the stylish and popular local couple Mack and Pat McBeth (James LeGros and Maura Tierney) is largely due to the convenient murder of its former owner (James Rebhorn). When the quirky vegetarian Lieutenant Ernie McDuff (Christopher Walken) is assigned to investigate the murder, each of Scotland's strange characters--the tanning salon operator, the homeless guy that lives in a barn, the perpetually drunk barfly--come forward to share what they know about the case. Some of the funniest moments of the film come from the lieutenant's interrogations of the teenage sons of the late restaurant owner, the amped rock guitarist Malcom (Tom Guiry) and his poised, artistic gay brother Norm (Geoff Dunsworth). SCOTLAND, PA is a funny, light hippie movie with an excellent grasp of '70s music, decor, and dress.
