It's difficult to dislike Myrkskog's debut, Death Machine, especially if meat-and-potatoes blackened death metal is your flavor of choice. Shot full of blastbeats, inspired riffing (courtesy of guitarist Destructhor, also a member of Zyklon), and clear, clinical, and chilly production values, the album offers the tempo changes and frantic double-bass work one comes to expect from Norway's frosty climes. While such sonic confines aren't exactly groundbreaking -- the band does occasionally crib a few ideas from the likes of fellow countrymen Immortal and Emperor -- it's Death Machine's consistent songwriting that keeps Myrkskog from being another corpse-painted pretender to the throne. "The Hate Syndicate," "Syndrome 9," and "Morphine Mangled Torture" offer well-thought-out arrangements that smoothly shift from hyperspeed blasts to double-time thrash without barreling too predictably through disjointed death metal landscapes, although the annoying techno remix of "Syndrome 9," which closes the album, is a major blunder. Convincing if not wholly original, Death Machine is a solid and coherent debut from a promising outfit. ~ John Serba

Death Machine album
$13.39 As evident by Myrkskog's new, pointy-lettered, nigh-unreadable logo on the cover of Superior Massacre, the Norwegian band's second full-length is a regression of sorts from the steely, solid black/death of its predecessor, Deathmachine. In fact, Superior Massacre is, more than anything else, a throwback to early '90s American death metal (think Morbid Angel or Suffocation), right down to the cheesy noise intro track, serpentine riffing, and overwrought "art" on the album cover. Myrkskog does its job well -- that is, multiple tempo changes, blasting speed, and razorblade-gargle vocals -- and, like Deathmachine, the songs are convincing, although the sophomoric subject matter (see "Over the Gore," "Blood Ejaculation," and "Bleeding Wrists") is a creative step backward, a notch closer to brain-dead gore metal. Also, main songwriter and guitarist Destructhor -- who is a consummate six-stringer in extreme metal circles -- has taken over vocal duties, and unfortunately possesses a one-dimensional growl that doesn't lend much definition to the songs. Clocking in at a concise 31 minutes, the album is most likely taking a stab at following up Reign in Blood (something to which ...

Death Machine music CDs
$10.09 Here's what Sweden's At the Gates told us with their first album, The Red in the Sky Is Ours: they were from, er, Sweden; they were very upset about something -- probably their parents; they played extremely fast and furious; and they pretty much sounded like a "baby" version of Entombed. Later on, their contributions would rank among the best death metal around, but for now it's best to focus on the title track and the latter-day concert favorite "Kingdom Gone" -- the spots where the early band shows particular inspiration. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Death Machine music CDs
$17.45 Principally recorded at Horus Studios, Hanover, Germany and Musiclab Studios, Berlin, Germany in 1988. Includes liner notes by Mille Petrozza.
TERRIBLE CERTAINTY serves up more ferocious metal by Germany's long-running and hugely successful thrash act Kreator. The album includes the songs "Blind Faith," "Toxic Trace" and "Lambs to Slaughter."
Kreator dialed in their modern thrash on Terrible Certainty, the group's third full-length offering. One of the most highly anticipated European metal records of the decade, this 1987 release proves that the previous year's hit, Pleasure to Kill, wasn't a fluke, and that Kreator was capable of delivering under pressure. The German outfit cranks up the technical difficulty on Terrible Certainty, executing the tightest performances of their career while maneuvering around some extremely difficult, yet memorable riffs. The guitar flurries of the title track and "Behind the Mirror" hold their own against the best work from Metallica or any other American thrash behemoths. Some might argue that the stateside metal heads even took some cues from Terrible Certainty. It is certain ...
