When a rogue Scanner, a man of unparalleled psychic power, wages a bloody war against the "normals," Cameron Vale is recruited to track him down. But Vale is inexperienced, and a battle with another Scanner could mean a grisly death, or worse. Can Vale vanquish his insanely violent, power-mad adversary? Scanners are men and women born with incredible telepathic and telekinetic powers. This breed of superbrains was developed as an accidental side effect of a tranquilizer administered to some women during pregnancy. Cameron Vale is one such scanner, and he, like most of those with similar powers, exercises the benefits of his special gifts in a safe and judicious manner. But a group of renegade scanners, led by the nefarious Revok, plans to create a race of telepathic ubermenschen who will rule the world. Vale must team up with a like-minded female scanner in order to thwart the plans of the fiendish gang. The protracted end game between Revok and Vale is heightened by a dark secret which is shockingly revealed just before their duel begins. Cronenberg previously dealt with the subject of telepathy in one of his earlier, more experimental, short films: "Stereo" (1969, Canada). "Stereo" is 63 minutes long and was shot without direct sound on black-and-white 35mm stock; a voice-over narration was written and added to the film after editing. Its story unfolds in an undesignated year in the future at a clinical institution established for the study of telepathic powers. Various cold-blooded experiments take place in this eerie institute, and the film can be seen as a deadpan satire on the humorless solemnity of scientific language and methods. As of 1993, "Stereo" was not available on video. $9.69 Based on both the short story by John W. Campbell, Jr. and the 1951 film produced by Howard Hawks, THE THING is John Carpenter's stunning masterpiece of horror. A group of weary scientists enduring the winter in an isolated camp deep in Antarctica chance upon an alien spacecraft buried in the ice. Near the strange craft is the body of an alien being, frozen solid. Thinking they have made the find of a lifetime, the scientists bring the alien body back to camp and thaw it out. The alien awakens, not in the best of moods, and proceeds to take over the identities of the scientists, one by one, body and all. Helicopter pilot MacCready (Kurt Russell) must lead the surviving men in discovering who among them is human and who is not and how they can destroy "the thing" before it takes them all and moves on to the heavily populated mainland and the rest of humanity. Rob Bottin supplies the awe-inspiring special effects of the creature in its many, ever-changing forms. The effects were groundbreaking at the time and hold up flawlessly over the passing years. But Carpenter does not rely solely on special effects, utilizing his ...

$13.55 A lighthearted meditation on the cares and commitments of adulthood, Bart Freundlich's rom-com drama is a witty, ultra-contemporary vision of urban love. Two Manhattan couples enjoy complicated relationships: Tom and Rebecca (David Duchovny and Julianne Moore) are a glamorous married couple with two kids and a troubled sex life; Rebecca's best friend, Elaine (Maggie Gylenhaal), is in a long-term relationship with Rebecca's brother, Tobey (Billy Crudup), who is also Tom's best friend. Tom has recently quit his advertising job to be a stay-at-home dad, and Rebecca is a successful actress with a depleting libido; thus, despite the couple's obvious closeness, Tom's porn consumption and general distraction have increased considerably. Meanwhile, Elaine juggles a stressful job in publishing and a fledgling career as a children's-book author, while Tobey's job as a copywriter is considerably less demanding. It is soon evident that Tobey has never quite grown up, and when Elaine decides that she wants to get married and have kids, she realizes she'll have to ...
