There's little question that Hip-O's 2001 double-disc set, Anthology, is a thorough, definitive overview of .38 Special's career, spanning from their hit-laden A&M albums, through their '90s albums for Charisma and Razor & Tie, and wrapping up with a studio cut from the CMC International release, Live at Sturgis. This is a good thing, if you're just judging an album in terms of comprehensiveness, which just may be what the dedicated are looking for, but if you're not dedicated, this collection is awfully long. That's not to say it doesn't do a good job of summarizing the group's career, since it does, but the hits -- "Rockin' in to the Night," "Hold on Loosely," "Caught Up in You," "If I'd Been the One," "Back Where You Belong" -- are so good, that the rest of the material is shown as the good, but generic, material that it is. So, for the casual fans, it might be better to seek out a more concise collection, including the 20th Century Masters disc, since they're almost all there. Yes, this collection contains a few gems not readily available on that disc or other collections -- the teachers theme, "Teacher, Teacher," and the hit ballad "Second Chance" -- but this still remains the province of the converted, not the casual. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Orchids' second full-length release -- first if you count Lyceum as just an EP, admittedly -- Unholy Soul is one of those albums that, hearing it for the first time, just makes you wonder where the band has been all this time. If Striving for the Lazy Perfection was their pinnacle, Unholy Soul is more than simply a lead up to it, 12 songs of emotional wit, sparkling U.K. indie pop arrangements spiked with a variety of electronic elements and a killer touch in James Hackett's vocals. While as seemingly drowsy as that of so many contemporary shoegazers -- something that the band's arrangements often parallel as well, though the Orchids favor a richness of texture over feedback overdrive and lots of digital delay -- Hackett's understatement isn't precious fragility but rumination, the voice of someone thinking things over in his head who occasionally finds courage to speak. So the impact of a song like "Bringing You the Love" relies on how gently but winningly he sings, especially on the chorus, over the low-key lope of the arrangement, snapping one's fingers and skipping down the lane. File under Indie Powers Used for Good. For the 36th volume of its Fabriclive series, Fabric tapped LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and Pat Mahoney, a duo that has been DJing together for roughly a year and possibly perplexing a fair portion of the audiences by not relying on the kind of rhythmic post-punk that has informed their own music. Fair enough: the path from "North American Scum" to Donald Byrd's Isaac Hayes-produced "Love Has Come Around" (included here) is a lot less direct than the path from "Losing My Edge" to the Fall. Mixed with a Bozak -- a standard early mixer used with the basic two-turntable setup -- and aided when needed by the Logic program, Murphy and Mahoney's set tends to have the feel of an on-the-fly gig with occasionally imperfect beat-matching and the sound of actual vinyl being spun. The selections are very inspired, ranging from tracks that are well-known among disco freaks (Instant Funk's "I Got My Mind Made Up," Was [Not Was]' "Tell Me That I'm Dreaming," Love Committee's "Just as Long as I've Got You") to less-known or less-played cuts (GQ's "Lies," Chic's "I Feel Your Love Comin' On," Jackson Jones' "I Feel Good Put Your Pants On").
