After spending several years languishing in Nashville, Rhonda Vincent made an unusual career move: she returned to bluegrass and recorded Back Home Again for Rounder in 2000. Garnering positive responses from critics and fans, Vincent knew she had made the right move. A cross between traditional and contemporary bluegrass, The Storm Still Rages features superb accompaniment and a handful of well-chosen songs. Vincent has also penned or co-penned several of the songs, including the opening cut, "Cry of the Whippoorwill." Her expressive vocal on the heartbreaker "Don't Lie" is lovingly underlined by Stuart Duncan's fiddle and Bryan Sutton's mandolin. Bassist Darrin Vincent, Rhonda's brother, adds harmony on a number of cuts, perfectly bringing each chorus into focus. There's a nice version of "I'm Not Over You," the song that inspired the album's title, with guest Rob Ickes on the Resophonic guitar, and a bluesy take on Hank Williams' "My Sweet Love Ain't Around." Although the arrangements vary quite a bit from song to song, banjoist Tom Adams and guitarist Sutton provide a steady base to work from. Complaints? Only that certain old-hoary classics like "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin" clash with Vincent's attractive vocals. It may be difficult for the listener to believe that this pretty voice is halfway to the grave from drinking rotgut. This aside, The Storm Still Rages should allow Vincent to take her place beside contemporary bluegrass alumni like Alison Krauss and Laurie Lewis. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Brilliant work by one of bluegrass's finest!
Rhonda Vincent’s album The Storm Still Rages is nothing short of spectacular!. Rhonda not only demonstrates her incredible angelic voice, but her prowess on the mandolin. Her playing is spectacular!. From start to finish, this is a brilliant, well-produced album!. The first cut Cry of the Whippoorwill, is catchy and instantly singable. Kenny Ingrams banjo starts this track off, drawing you in. The tribute to Bill Monroe Is The Grass Any Bluer is touching, especially since I read that Rhonda got to meet the legendary Monroe on her birthday. Don’t Lie is one of my favorite songs with the chorus: “Just go ahead and say goodbye, but don’t lie”. The up tempo Driving Nails in My Coffin is heartbreaking, and tells a story of a woman alone drinking herself to death because she can’t forget her true love. I’m Not Over You is gorgeous with beautifully tight harmonies and Hunter Berry’s signature grunting fiddle. Every song on this disc is a winner but my personal faves are: Cry of the Whippoorwill, Don’t Lie, Solid Ground, I’m Not Over You, Driving Nails in My Coffin and My Sweet Love Ain’t Around. If you love bluegrass, buy this disc. If you want to hear stellar musicians perform buy this disc! And if you have never heard of Rhonda Vincent, this disc will be played over and over again! It’s in rotation in my CD player right now!.

$16.45 Rachel Loywww.myspace.com/rachelloywww.rachelloy.comYou can hear it in her songs: Rachel Loy feels right at home with life’s contradictions. In fact, you might say she’s a bit of a contradiction herself.Hard to pin down, and hard to forget, Rachel Loy has always had it both ways: she’s a sweet, petite blonde who sings heartrending ballads with an aching vulnerability, and she drives her electric bass like it’s a pack of pit bulls. She works incredibly hard, but she makes it look easy. She rode the fleeting fame train with a major-label, Billboard-charted hit single at the ripe old age of nineteen, and now, three years after making her mark, she’s ready to be discovered—again. In the late nineties, Rachel Loy made a precocious debut at the age of thirteen, playing bass and singing with her sister for standing-room-only crowds at the renowned “Babes On Sixth” club in Austin. They held the Friday night slot for almost four years. “By the time I was eighteen I was already sick of the downtown party scene – just when all my high school friends were discovering it!” she says. When she went off to college, Rachel did ...
