A good matchup of two similar and consecutive LP releases is offered on this discount-priced two-fer. It Must Be Him and Honey were Ray Conniff's first two albums of 1968, and they were among his more successful, each enjoying a long chart run and earning gold record certification. Conniff had updated his arranging style by this point, adapting himself to the rock revolution by bringing in electric guitars and beefing up the sound of the rhythm section, but he hadn't changed his basic approach. All 22 tracks here are his versions of songs that were in the pop charts between 1964 and 1968, originally recorded by the likes of British Invasion acts like the Beatles and Herman's Hermits as well as a slew of middle-of-the-road pop singers. The idea for this album came from an appearance by this group at the 1992 Port Townsend Jazz Festival in the state of Washington. The result is a varied musical playbill of bop anthems, standards, a couple of Williams' originals and a contribution by Stevie Wonder. Williams is not wedded to any one particular model of piano playing, which is richly evident in the trio's handling of "A Gal in Calico." This tune, which Arthur Schwartz/Leo Robin wrote for the movie The Time, the Place and the Girl, is the subject of nine minutes of improvisational investigation running the performance gamut from march-like drumming by Dick Berk to pizzicato bass plucking by Jeff Johnson. Innovation and surprise seem to be Williams' theme throughout the album. None of the performances can be pigeonholed into a particular style or tempo, each being a mixture of many musical formats. Stevie Wonder's "I Really Love You" starts off as avant-garde, then segues into a dream-like melody. An 11-minute explication of "Cheek to Cheek" is filled with surprises, with the familiar melody, more often than not, barely recognizable. The playing of Jessica Williams and her cohorts is a classic example of the "stream of consciousness" approach to small group endeavor, where the imagination doesn't completely run wild, but comes close ...

As a leader, saxophonist and composer Gary Thomas is wildly ambitious. Throughout the 1980s and into the '90s, Thomas experimented with everything from free jazz and funk to heavy metal and hip-hop. Exile's Gate is another such exercise. There are two distinct bands accompanying him here. One is made up of Thomas on tenor with drummer Jack DeJohnette and guitarist Paul Bollenback with organist Tim Murphy and bassist Ed Howard. The other features the latter two musicians, Marvin Sewell on guitar and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. The first band plays Thomas' free-spirited and aggressive originals while the second plays standards for the most part. Only Thomas would think of putting the two approaches together on one record on alternate cuts. The pace is set by the title cut that opens the set, a freewheeling, menacing journey into overdriven counterpoint, and spirited interplay between Bollenbeck and the saxophonist utilizing hard rock tropes with DeJohnette traveling from one end of the color spectrum to the other.
