Three-time Tony Award winner Glenn Close and two-time Grammy Award winner Harry Connick, Jr. join a magnificent cast in this critically-acclaimed sensation. Sing along with some of the most memorable music ever written for the stage, including "Some Enchanting Evening" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair." Prepare yourself for an enchanting evening of fun and adventure with this contemporary version of an award-winning American classic, Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific." Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic musical about war, love, and racial bigotry is adapted for television in ABC's entertaining version of SOUTH PACIFIC. Based on the novel TALES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC by James A. Michener, the musical stars Glenn Close as the spunky Nellie Forbush, a World War II nurse stationed on a tropical island in the Pacific. Nellie meets a French plantation owner, Emile (Rade Sherbedgia), and falls in love with the mysterious man whose lifestyle is so different from her own Little Rock roots. Harry Connick Jr. is Lt. Joseph Cable, a marine sent to the island with top-secret plans to spy on the nearby Japanese fleet. After Joe becomes friends with a local merchant, Bloody Mary (Lori Tan Chinn), she brings him to the enchanted island of Bali Ha'i, where she introduces him to her daughter--an exotic beauty he soon becomes enamored with. The lovely tropical location is the perfect backdrop to showcase Rodgers & Hammerstein's mesmerizing score, which includes the classic songs "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Ha'i," "There Is Nothin' Like a Dame," "Younger Than Springtime," "A Cock-eyed Optimist," and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair." Television release (ABC): March 26, 2001.

South Pacific Movie Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) Rather bland production Having worked in the Australian film industry I bought "South Pacific" in good faith but have to admit that I found it rather dull and only a shadow of the original with Mitzi Gaynor. The singing was very ordinary and even Harry Connick Jr was not at his best. The scene on Bali Hai was just a non event. My conclusion was that one of the producers, Glenn Close, was trying to recapture a role that she may have excelled at twenty years ago. I don't think a middle aged Nellie Forbush would never have made it past the recruitment desk trying to sign up for Allied action. Submitted by Brian, (Melbourne, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? A Great Remake The actors/actress chosen for the primary roles were an excellanr choice. The scenery and songs were wonderful. I enjoyed the first film, but this remake was more " down to earth" because the characters were more believeable and not so " Hollywoodish" Submitted by patlukanen (Mpls,Mn USA) Was This Review Helpful? I was in it I havnt seen this movie here in Australia yet, but I was in Port Douglas while they had a shoot up there.
I hope everyone can appreciate the effort that went into the making of this movie with the demanding wheather (Being in the tropics of Aust)and persistant lighting problems.
The cast that I met were all professional, except some of the younger Australian stars who were too big for there boots.
If any person has a copy of this and would like to share it with me I would be most appreciative;
yours
