| | Foghat Extended Versions CD Foghat Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
The Foghat edition of the budget-priced Extended Versions series from BMG is comprised of ten tracks featuring a latter day lineup of the group. All the familiar favorites are here, including "Fool for the City," "Slow Ride," and "Drivin' Wheel" in addition to re-workings of such blues classics as "I Just Want to Make Love to You," "It Hurts Me Too," "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Louisiana Blues." Collectors will be pleased with the choice of material on this disc, but the casual listener should first check out Foghat's official 1977 concert release Foghat Live available on Bearsville. ~ Al Campbell

| | Foghat Decades Live CDs (2003) Remastered
Extended Versions music CDs
$17.19 Recorded in 1977, 1980, 1996 and 1999. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott.
While the album's title is deceiving -- all but five of the 18 tracks on this double disc originate from the '90s, and 11 of those are from the same show -- this is an adequate, well-recorded document of both the original and re-formed versions of Foghat running through their established repertoire. It also works as a tribute to Lonesome Dave Peverett, the group's lead singer and primary songwriter, who died of cancer in February 2000, about a year after the most recent recording here. Since the band hit their peak in 1977 with their first live recording (a 1977 version of "I Ain't Got You" is this disc's oldest, tightest, and most succinct performance and might even be an outtake from that album), this can't help but be a retread. Still, the group retains most of their original lineup and their sweat-stained boogie-blues remains energetic enough, even though at over two hours, this is a bit much for all but the most dedicated. Extended versions of "Slow Ride" (at nine and a half minutes), "Chateau Laffite '59 Boogie" (nearly 15 minutes), and "I Just Want to Make Love to You" (which clocks in at a whopping ...
| | Led Zeppelin How The West Was Won CDs (2003)
Extended Versions songs
$17.59 In the course of putting together the live Led Zeppelin DVD for 2003 release, Jimmy Page came across some great concert recordings from the band's 1972 stint in California. HOW THE WEST WAS WON is three discs' worth of vintage Zep, far superior to the band's only other live album THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. Here is the fearsome foursome in all their glory and fury, coming off like crazed rock & roll Vikings on the opening "Immigrant Song," reinventing the blues form on "Heartbreaker," and just plain rocking the doors off the joint on "Rock and Roll" and "Black Dog."
This being 1972, the band had made its journey into the folk-rock realm as well, and come out with the touching "Going to California" and "That's the Way," the earthy "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp," and the minstrel-in-the-hills fancy of "Over the Hills and Far Away," all of which are given strong voice here. A 25-minute "Dazed and Confused" and epic-length drum solo on the John Bonham feature "Moby Dick" show that Zep was unafraid to venture into anything they ...
| | Talking Heads Once In A Lifetime CDs (1992) With DVD; Remastered
Extended Versions album
$55.49 Recorded between 1976 & 1992. Includes liner notes by Tim Scanlin.
Expanding on the excellent two-disc SAND IN THE VASELINE compilation, the three-CD/one-DVD Talking Heads box set, ONCE IN A LIFETIME, includes most of the former release, along with more than 20 additional tracks. Like the highly visual NYC art-rockers themselves, the collection, in both sound and design, is perversely smart and strangely beautiful.
Starting with the group's early days in the late 1970s, ...

Extended Versions music CDs
$11.35 Switching to Kemado after a brief stay at Vice Records, where they released their impressive debut EP, The Concrete's Always Grayer on the Other Side of the Street, Vietnam returned with their self-titled full-length. While they're still playing the same kind of hazy, narcotic poet-rock they introduced on the EP, this time around the results are hit-and-miss. One of the biggest problems with the album is its sound. While The Concrete's Always Grayer on the Other Side of the Street wasn't lo-fi, its sweaty, gritty production gave Vietnam's songs warmth and conviction. Vietnam was recorded in Los Angeles' famed Sound City studio, and unfortunately this more polished approach diminishes the band, making their sound thinner and more shrill than it was before. This doesn't do the ambitious sprawl of their music any favors. Though "Step on Inside" makes good use of the album's wall-of-sound production, more often it tends to show how big the gap between the band and the sound they're reaching for is. Tracks like the anti-materialism lament "Mr. Goldfinger" and lengthy junkie requiem "Toby" (one of many references on ...
