"Any Day Now" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.
For his self-titled debut on J Records, Clive Davis's post-Arista venture, Luther Vandross manages to incorporate enough contemporary production touches to keep himself sounding current, without abandoning the old-school style that made him a star in the '80s. Vandross is the original R&B love man--he's been practicing his singular brand of soul and sensuality since most of today's mack daddies were in short pants, and his experience is apparent here.
Instead of the full-on approach of an R. Kelly, Vandross is content to let his voice glide gently across a subtle bed of funky guitars and keyboards, issuing a quiet-but-confident invitation to love. The melodic hooks that are intrinsic to the album's arrangements (production chores are ably handled by Davis and Vandross) leap out just enough to pull the listener into the music. Once immersed in Luther's world, you'll likely be focused largely on the man's powerful voice and tasteful, emotive singing; that's what it's all about anyhow.

Entertainment Weekly (7/20/01, pp.68-9) - "...Armed with G-rated ballads...and a bevy of hot producers who step aside to let the man do his thang, Lutey and his caramel-smooth croon could spark yet another baby boom." - Rating: A- Luther Vandross Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) TRUE LUTHER... This CD is SWEET, SWEET, SWEET Very seldom comes along a CD where every song on it is top notched. I have yet to find one of Luther's CD's with a song I do not like. This particular CD makes you want to snuggle up close with your significant other, open a fine bottle of wine, burn candles and call it a night of love.
Keep it coming. Submitted by a reviewer (Richmond, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Luther Vandross album
$12.69 I KNOW was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance. "I Know" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
For his first album on Virgin, R&B icon Vandross decided it was time to reinvent his music. That's just what he does on I KNOW, his 14th release. Over the course of this recording, everything from rap to funk to house to jazz turns up in the musical mix, but whatever the flavor of the cut, every track here is 100 percent Luther, as the singer delivers the kind of full-bodied, emotive performances that are his trademark.
"Nights in Harlem" is laced with rap and funk, as Vandross engages in a bit of nostalgia, recalling his boyhood. Joined by Cassandra Wilson, Vandross indulges his jazz jones on one of the album's highlights "I'm Only Human." With the help of "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzales, our man even dips his toe into the waters of house music on the propulsive dance-floor thumper "Are You ...
| | Alicia Keys Songs In A Minor CD (2001)
Luther Vandross CD music
$9.59 Alicia Keys won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. SONGS IN A MINOR won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "Fallin'" won the 2002 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song.
Picture Roberta Flack with hip-hop trimmings or D'Angelo coming at the world from a female perspective and you get an idea of the immense talent welling up from musical prodigy Alicia Keys. Blessed with a soulful voice, mature-beyond-her-years songwriting, and a classically trained command of piano, it's no wonder music mogul Clive Davis brought the 20-year old performer over from Arista as one of the flagship artists for his new label J Records. Keys displays impressive range on this primarily self-penned debut that finds her taking part in arranging and/or production on every cut, once again redeeming Davis's instincts.
Besides the well-earned buzz for the gripping love-and-loathe single "Fallin'," Keys earns high marks for fusing rap beats and vintage Aretha on a confidently delivered cover of Prince's "How Come You ...
| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
Luther Vandross music CDs
$8.89 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary Nite." At the centerpiece is a studio version ...
| | Kylie Minogue Fever CD (2002) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Luther Vandross songs
$41.75 The 2002 enhanced Japan-only version features four additional tracks and two videos.
It's more than just journalistic shorthand to refer to Kylie Minogue as the European Madonna. She's been at it as long as the Material Girl, and her mix of sexy style and dance-pop sound is very much in league with that of her American counterpart. The catch here is that, while Minogue had previously only been a star in Europe, FEVER represents her American breakthrough. ...
| | Luther Vandross Dance With My Father CD (2003)
Luther Vandross album
$8.99 DANCE WITH MY FATHER won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "Dance With My Father" won for Song Of The Year and for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. The song was also nominated for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals and for Best R&B Song. "The Closer I Get To You" won for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals.
Life can be cruel and nowhere is this more apparent than when Luther Vandross was felled by a stroke just prior to the release of DANCE WITH MY FATHER. For the most personal of his 15 albums, Vandross dipped into the worlds of R&B and hip-hop for help on a handful of songs. Checking in are Beyonce Knowles playing Donny Hathaway to Luther's Roberta Flack on a lush reading of "The Closer I Get to You" that finds the roles flipped and Busta Rhymes hopping aboard a thumping cover of Bill Withers' "Lovely Day" (that includes a Part II). Also helping out with the heavy lifting are Queen Latifah on the snappy "Hit It Again" with its crackling rhythms, and bad-girl Foxy Brown who brings plenty of attitude to the sassy "If It Ain't One Thing." For all the celebrity cameos, Vandross is most successful when he masterfully changes gears ...
| | Marlene Verplanck What Are We Going To Do With All This Moonlight? CD (1999)
Luther Vandross CD music
$12.09 For a pleasant diversion from the usual, the album features not just standards, but songs that are not heard all that frequently. Despite Ver Planck's valiant efforts, it becomes clear very quickly why one doesn't hear some of these ditties very often: They simply are not very good. On the other hand, there are some real gems that Ver Planck has brought to light. The Harry Warren/Al Dubin track "Sweet and Slow," from the 1935 film Broadway Gondolier, is done in a syncopated style which makes the music interesting, even though the lyrics are a bit simplistic. There's some great ensemble work on this tune and it accommodates to Ver Planck's scatting style quite nicely. The Gerry Mulligan Mel Torme-penned "The Real Thing," a truly beautiful tune, gets a gorgeous rendering from Ver Planck, with plenty of help from the sax section and Stanley Laferrier's piano. "This Is the End of a Beautiful Friendship" is a vehicle for each member of the band to solo. Claude Tissendier's clarinet and Claude Braud's tenor especially stand out. Marlene's talented husband, J. "Billy" Ver Planck composed several tunes for this session; "Nobody, But Nobody" is the best of these, with a nice fox trot arrangement that may well encourage listeners to get up and dance. Braud's tenor gets some solo space on this tune. "Star ...
