Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. Claude Challe's Buddha-Bar, Vol. II compilation has elements of Far Eastern spirituality, African song, European electronica, and Spanish spice. The first album, Buddha-Bar, is very mellow for the most part. Deepak Chopra and Demi Moore, far and away the most recognizable names on the album, do a spoken word ditty on love and self-worth. People who are not fans of new age doctrine will appreciate artists such as Oliver Shanti and Consuelo Luz, both of whom contribute songs that manage to sound musical, spiritual and ethnic at once. The second album varies from hallucinatory to groovy to fairly high-energy. "Tears Inshalla" will appeal to fans of Eastern-influenced trance. Lyrics are of almost no importance on the album. In the Land of Salvation and Sin was an attempt by Georgia Satellites' songwriter and frontman Dan Baird to reinvent his band while not changing the formula too drastically. The band's third and final outing, it followed the disappointing sales of Open All Night with an even harder approach that kept its focus on American roots music. The sound may never have strayed far from the raucous, garagey style that gave the band its hit with 1986's "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," but it also took deeper consideration of pop radio as well, as evidenced by the power ballad "It's All Over But the Crying." "Shake That Thing" is a tribute to Lowell George and evokes the late songwriter's sense of humor and, of course, wrangling slide guitar, as well as Little Feat's funky backbeat and chorus line refrains. The stomp and drunken roll of "Six Years Gone" sounds like a great lost Faces track -- and as evidence, "Another Chance" (written by Baird) emulates the interplay between Faces' Ronnie Lane's songwriting style and Ron Wood's slide guitar playing on "Ooh La La," to the degree he includes a "Hats off to Woody and Ronnie Lane" in the songwriting credits. From Vallejo, CA (also the home of the E-40 & The Click), gangsta rapper Mac Dre moved to the Romp label in 1996 after two small releases on the Strictly Business label. Mac Dre Presents the Rompalation made the R&B charts near the end of 1996; a sequel followed in 1999. Turf Buccaneers and Mac Dre Is the Name were issued in early 2001. Some of the tracks from Mac Dre that have received the strongest notoriety include Too Hard For The Radio, Thizzle Dance and Get Stupid. Mac Dre has always had a strong street credibility but it wasn't until his untimely demise in 2004 that he really started to get the long overdue credit on the commercial airwaves that he deserved. With his unique vocal delivery and flows, Mac Dre is arguably one of the hardest emcees to ever come out of the San Francisco Bay Area. He has been be compared to other hip-hop heavyweights out of the bay area such as E-40 and the late great Tupac Shakur. Although the contents of this 1967 concert package have long been attributed to the Big Apple's Madison Square or Cinci's own Cincinnati Gardens -- which was only a stones-throw from King Records, Inc's Brewster Ave. digs -- neither is factually correct. Truth be told, the closest thing to a garden at the Latin Casino is that it resides in Cherry Hill, NJ -- the Garden State. It is here that Soul Brother # 1 brought the Fabulous Flames Orchestra & Revue to churn and burn their way through two sets a night between January 10 and 19, 1967.
