(1 Customer Review)
The Cincinnati-based Blue Wisp Big Band celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2000 with this CD. The band's music is conventional, swings hard, and has tight ensembles. Although few of the sidemen (except trumpeter Brad Goode and the leader, drummer John Von Ohlen) are known outside of the Midwest, they are excellent musicians and do a fine job of interpreting these swinging arrangements. In addition to three originals, the band plays nine songs, most of which are rarely played in a big band format. Fans of modern, swinging big bands will enjoy checking out the Blue Wisp Big Band, who previously recorded five albums (four of which are available on Sea Breeze). ~ Scott Yanow

$13.39 The Blue Wisp Big Band are a longtime favorite in the Cincinnati club that is their namesake, and they had entertained jazz fans for over two decades by the time of this live recording in 2002. Don't let lack of familiarity with the musicians' names fool you; they are strong players who can solo with the best of them. Their skills as arrangers and composers are also on display. Baritonist Larry Dickson's explosive big-band setting of Dave Brubeck's "Theme from Mr. Broadway" revives a neglected gem by one of jazz's most prolific composers, while he also scored Billy Taylor's delightful Latin-flavored "Capricious," sharing the solo spotlight ...

20th Anniversary CD music
$15.69 Ahmad Jamal's early recording career is given a reasonably in-depth survey on this 18-track, 72-minute collection of material from 1951-1955. The earliest four of these tracks feature him at the head of a trio with guitarist Ray Crawford and bassist Eddie Calhoun, but the remainder of the set (all recorded in 1955) were cut by the lineup with Jamal, Crawford, and bassist Israel Crosby. It might be tamer and more conventional than Jamal's later material, particularly due to the absence of drums (though there are plenty of popping percussion punctuations). It's still highly respectable early cool jazz, with the accent on covers of standards, though there are a few Jamal originals sprinkled in (including one of his most renowned early compositions, the funky "Ahmad's Blues"). Too, this has his interpretation of "Pavanne," which was likely influential on both Miles Davis' "So What" and John Coltrane's "Impressions." Throughout, it's easy to hear why Davis considered Jamal an important musician, as Jamal's style -- swinging, but with a certain amount of clean ...
