$15.05 Unlike Bobby Hutcherson's previous super mellow effort For Sentimental Reasons, this recording is charged with increased energy and vitality, inspired by the music of John Coltrane. | | Louis Armstrong Love Songs CD (2000)
Divas Of Swing
$7.69 Digitally remastered by Darcy Proper, Sony Music Studios, New York, New York.
This 15-song compilation of performances emphasizes Armstrong's vocals and romantic material. Although the material spans 1929 to 1961, because of what Columbia has access to, the chronological balance is skewed; half a dozen tracks were done between 1929 and 1930, and the rest between 1955 and 1961, leaving a large gap between the two periods. It remains a rather pleasing and effective sampler of Armstrong's most accessible qualities. The later cuts include five numbers from his Fat Waller tribute album Satch Plays Fats, and two cuts from his The Real Ambassadors Album with Carmen McRae and the Dave Brubeck Trio. Velma Middleton adds vocals to a few songs, including the sole unreleased performance "Ko Ko Mo, I Love You So" from the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | David Kikoski Surf's Up CD (2001) (Import) Netherlands
Divas Of Swing
$16.39 David Kikoski's fourth Criss Cross is another fine trio effort, featuring James Genus on bass and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums. Quite unlike Kikoski's previous discs, however, this one features no original material at all. It begins with a surprising choice: Frank Zappa's "Oh No," from the Lumpy Gravy album, an intricate piece of work that ...
| | Charles Fambrough Upright Citizen CD (1997) Reissued
Divas Of Swing
$12.89 The heart of a jazz fan beats like Fambrough's bass, driving the lifeblood of warm sounds through the speakers and into the brain. Some bassists, in their own sessions, favor percussive and percolating arrangements that place the instrument in the role of soloist. Charles Fambrough actually seems to downplay the bass on Upright Citizen, ceding the spotlight to guests like Grover Washington, Jr. and Joe Ford. Fambrough's domain here is the rhythm section, adding programmed drums to his basslines in order to get the right foundation in place. As the captain of this ship, Fambrough ensures a smooth ride, absorbing the shock in Alex Bugnon's potentially bumpy "In Stride" and making sure a track like "D's Song" has the right amount of snap to it. Though Fambrough built his reputation largely on bop, Upright Citizen is more of a crossover album, lyrical and light on its feet. There are certainly stretches of substance, such ...

| | Alex Budman Instruments Of Mass Pleasure CD (2005)
Divas Of Swing
$12.89 Instruments of Mass Pleasure is an insanely good album. The review can end there suitably. The Alex Budman Contemporary Jazz Orchestra is a fixture at Pearl's in San Francisco, with a sound at least somewhat similar to the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Here, they take on a series of what are primarily their own compositions with one or two other penned numbers thrown in. What one is struck by foremost, though, aside from any composition issues, is that this outfit has some incredible players built in. The album opens with some big band swing that hearkens to the advances of the big band around the '60s, but with more finesse than many of the older recordings could dream of. In "Samba in 7," the band evokes Dizzy Gillespie's Afro-Cuban big band perfectly, despite that not being the intention. Latin jazz appears to be a specialty as it's carried into the Corsican-inspired "Girolata," and then it's back to the powerful horn section and the piano prowess of composer Leonard ...
