A 1998 concept album based on the bloody legend of the murderous Hungarian countess Elizabeth Bathory, CRUELTY AND THE BEAST finds the English black-metal act Cradle of Filth indulging in a Wagnerian symphonic sound. While some of CRUELTY's tracks stick to a more straightforward metal aesthetic (see the demonic, driving "Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids"), "Desire in Violent Overture" and the sweeping "Bathory Aria" embody frontman Dani Filth's vision of a more grandiose depiction of narrative horror. Subsequent outings would see the goth-leaning ensemble reaching a wider audience, but BEAST stands out as one of Cradle of Filth's most ambitious and impressive achievements.

Cradle of Filth's third full-length is another slab of uncompromising black metal, a darkly melodramatic opus where the song titles alone ("Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids," "The Twisted Nails of Faith," and "Lustmord and Wargasm [The Lick of Carnivorous Winds]") tell almost the entire story; fans of the genre will embrace Cruelty and the Beast, but the unconverted are likely to find it all rather silly. [The 2001 reissue appended a bonus CD that offered the album version of "Lustmord and Wargasm (The Relicking of Cadaverous Wounds)," a remix of "Twisting Further Nails," and covers of Sodom's "Sodomy and Lust," Iron Maiden's "Hallowed Be Thy Name," and Venom's "Black Metal."] ~ Jason Ankeny

Hallowed be thy name and Bathoria Aria are my favorite tracks from this album. Every instrument with the vocals are in perfect sync with each other. The Poetic stories told are too touching and just revs me up giving me limitless energy. I salute you Cradle of Filth; you are the best musicians ever. The screeches and screams, the howls and moans that flow smoothly with the keyboards, drums, guitars and bass are the sole embodiement of perfection in music. I look forward to other achievements from this band that will be remembered in history. Submitted by ebazz8305 (Elsmere, KY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Cruelty And The Beast album
$9.79 The music on From the Cradle to Enslave was originally featured on the Cradle of Filth home video PanDaemonAeon, and was released overseas several months before its 2000 American issue. While not quite on the level of the band's best full-lengths, the EP is a worthy addition to any fan's collection, featuring several songs that rank with the best of their ...

Cruelty And The Beast music CDs
$14.29 As satanic as anything need be, Cradle of Filth are a black metal ensemble from Suffolk, England, who've managed to keep it extreme, while being wildly popular internationally. They may be the most popular black metal band in the world because they've managed to break away from the genre's relatively small cult following and successfully infect all sorts of disaffected teenagers, especially in Europe. They never veer drastically from the usual black metal staples: movie monster-type vocals, lots of high-pitched screams, indecipherable lyrics, and relentless, punishing riffs. But Midian has its fair share of melody too. (Most of the finest metal does have some element of melody.) The album begins with a chorus of what sounds like some evil monks chanting and is at its very best when the ominous, classical-style keyboards kick in. ~ Adam Bregman

| | Cradle Of Filth Damnation And A Day CD (2003)
Cruelty And The Beast album
$11.05 In the beginning there was metal and it was heavy. In the mid-'80s an underground sub-genre made a name for itself based as much on satanic imagery as on extreme music, with bands like Bathory and Mayhem. Enter England's Cradle of Filth, who took black metal to new heights in the '90s. DAMNATION AND A DAY finds the band at the artistic pinnacle of its controversial career, with the unprecedented-for-the-genre support of Sony firmly behind them.
Forged with fire and brimstone, DAMNATION tells the biblical tale of temptation ("Serpent Tongue") and the revenge of outcasts ("Carrion"), a theme present in many Cradle albums, be the subjects cast out of society or heaven. Dani Filth's multifaceted whisper-to-a-scream vocals are ...
