In this marvelous thriller starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, Hepburn returns to Paris from vacation to discover her husband murdered. Three men who attend the funeral begin stalking Hepburn, demanding to know the whereabouts of $250,000 stolen by her husband and the menacing trio years before. Protected only by a U.S. embassy man and the suave Grant, Hepburn must find the money before she is killed too. But can she really trust Grant, whose story and name change every day? Filled with twists and delectable chemistry between Grant and Hepburn, CHARADE delivers both passion and suspense as well as a sly sense of humor.

Lovely Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) is determined to divorce her wealthy, cold, and closed-mouthed husband, but someone throws him from a train before she gets the chance. Left penniless in Paris with police suspicion resting heavily upon her, Reggie soon realizes she's in serious trouble--her husband stole money from three unscrupulous men, and they want the money back. Charming and amusing Cary Grant, recalling his screwball comedy days while still remaining manly, comes to Reggie's aid. But he too has secrets and hidden loyalties. With the bodies piling up and the money nowhere to be found, Grant and Hepburn dash through Paris toward the startling solution. Agatha Christie-like in its unexpected twists and colorful characters and shimmering with fun and passion, CHARADE is a suspense gem that deserves to be much better known than it is. The supporting cast, led by Walter Matthau, James Coburn, and George Kennedy, is terrific, the interaction between Hepburn and Grant is an absolute joy, and Stanley Donen's playful direction all combine to make this film a small classic.

Based on the story "The Unsuspecting Wife" by Marc Behm and Peter Stone. Marc Behm's EYE OF THE BEHOLDER was made into a film in 1999.

"It's sophisticated, tasty, and a bit bizarre....The thrills are consistent..." -- Edward Karam, Entertainment Weekly

"[E]njoy Peter Stone's witty, suspenseful script and the zippy Grant/Hepburn banter." -- Peter Hogan, Uncut

4 stars A Classic later Cary Grant film
This is a fine Cary Grant film, and Audrey Hepburn is a plus! It is also fun to see Walter Matthau, George Kennedy and James Coburn in early roles. Also included on the disk is a bonus film by James and Pamela Mason also called Charade, that is a full 90 minutes and is 3 short stories that they put together, a nice bonus from a pair of fine actors.

5 stars A chic and mod Paris adventure!
Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn are both so otherworldly that it would take a movie like this to display their unique magic. From the fab opening credits with 60s abstract art and a great melody by Mancini to the clothes by Givenchy and the clever script, this is a winner. Grant is dashing and debonair, Hepburn lovely and even more dazzling than you would expect. An adventure to live again and again. Romance en Paris?!?! BEAUTIFUL.

4 stars One of Hepburns Best
This is truly one of my favorite Hepburn movies. Breakfast at Tiffiny's ranks up there for me, and this is like Breakfast at Tiffiny's with a real plot. Speaking of the plot, it would have been a good movie no matter who the cast in it (not as good mind you, but good). It comes complete with intrigue, romance, and a few well designed plot twists. I'm surprised they haven't redone it yet like the Thomas Crown Affair. Anyway, topnotch movie with a topnotch cast including Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Walter Matthau, James Corburn, and a few others you might recognize by face but probably not by name.

Cary Grant and Tony Curtis star as naval officers in this service comedy, one of the director's favorite genres. When Adm. Matt Sherman's (Grant) submarine, the Sea Tiger, is damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he needs to find spare parts to have it recommissioned. Into the breach steps aide Lt. Nick Holden (Curtis), a master con man and wheeler-dealer who begins scheming to acquire the materials needed to fix the sub while the appalled Sherman looks the other way. Once the sub is deemed seaworthy, they stop at an island where Holden picks up a couple of Filipino families and five navy nurses who have been stranded there. The arrival of the extremely attractive nurses in the sub's cramped quarters has the predicted effect on the young, all-male crew, who soon find concentrating on their work to be an impossible task. The women also have their own ideas about the renovation of the submarine, one of which involves painting it pink. Despite the dated 1950s gender stereotypes, the comic genius of Grant and the energy of Curtis, in addition to a script witty enough to have been nominated for an Academy Award, keep the film afloat. Among the talented cast are Dick Sargent, Arthur O'Connell, Dina Merrill, Gene Evans, and Gavin McLeod, who would later return to the seas as the captain of THE LOVE BOAT. This World War II comedy stars Cary Grant in an uncharacteristic turn as Walter Eckland. Walter is an unshaven bum who inhabits a deserted island in the South Seas. Completely boozed up, unshaven, and badly dressed, Walter is a watcher for Japanese spy planes. An Australian Navy Commander, Frank Houghton (Trevor Howard) has pressed Walter, who once had his own cruiser at the beginning of the war, to become the sole occupant of a strategic watching station. It is into this world that smart and sexy Catherine Frenau (Leslie Caron) is drawn when Walter, en route in a dinghy to rescue another watcher, stumbles on to the schoolteacher and a flock of seven young girls. The girls have been marooned because their pilot was ordered to leave them to rescue the survivors of an abandoned bomber. Ralph Nelson directs shrewdly and keeps the comedy crisp as these eight survivors try to inhabit the same small island without driving each other crazy. The sharp witted Academy Award winning screenplay by Peter Stone and Frank Tarloff, is based on a story by S.H. Barnett. Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English

Director William Wyler went to Paris to shoot this frothy caper comedy. Nicole Bonnet (Audrey Hepburn) lives with her father, Charles (Hugh Griffith). He keeps them in luxury by selling an occasional painting--maybe a Renoir, maybe a van Gogh. A well-known art connoisseur, he has an endless supply of paintings; he paints them himself--like his father before him, he is an expert forger. Persuaded to loan a Cellini sculpture--actually created by his father--for an exhibition, Charles is horrified when the museum decides to insure the sculpture and sends for an expert to authenticate it. Afraid the Bonnets will be exposed, Nicole decides to help. After thwarting an apparent robbery, she becomes attracted to the intruder, Simon Dermott (Peter O'Toole). She contacts Simon again, with a proposition: She wants him to help her steal the Cellini--before it is inspected. Never for a moment taking itself seriously, this amusing concoction rests in the capable hands of its handsome and witty stars. They both deliver: Audrey is fetching and Peter is dashing. The robbery--an amusing take on the elaborate jewelry heists seen in Jules Dassin's RIFIFI and TOPKAPI--is as intricate and amusing as it is unlikely.
