Pricipally recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California from December 10-12, 1973; the Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois in 1974; Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1974. It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with ...
Guantanamera/The Sandpipers
Guantanamera/The Sandpipers CD  (2000)

Upland Breakdown
CD $13.59  4.3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
There is an undeniable charm in the whimsy and subdued kitsch of these affably mellow melodies. This two-fer from Collectors' Choice Music gathers the Sandpipers' 1966 release Guantanamera, as well as their self-titled follow-up from 1967. These were the highest charting long-players that the trio -- consisting of vocalists Jim Brady, Mike Piano, and Richard Shoff -- issued, reaching number 13 and number 53 respectively on the pop album charts. In addition to including the title track from their LP -- the South American folk standard "Guantanamera" -- this disc also highlights some remarkably fresh sounding pop/rock covers, as well as other traditional folk songs from around the globe. While Guantanamera is their debut album, the members of the Sandpipers had previously worked together for several years. Initially, the three met as members of the Mitchell Boys' Choir before seceding to perform as the Four Seasons, and later the Grads. Enter the "A" of A&M records -- Herb Alpert -- who first signed them to his label, and, second, placed their talents into the careful supervision of staff producer Tommy LiPuma and musical arrangers Nick DeCaro and Mort Garson. Indeed, the inobtrusive sound that the team came up with was strikingly similar in approach to that of Alpert's own Tijuana Brass and their percussive cousins, the Julius Wechter-led Baja Marimba Band. The trio's blithe vocals -- which are often enhanced by an uncredited female lead -- are ideally suited to the equally carefree and often lush instrumentals, producing some interesting and quite unexpected results. On one end of the spectrum are the somewhat conventional interpretations ...

1 Giant Leap CD  (2002)

Upland Breakdown
CD $12.59  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Maxi Jazz, Eddi Reader, Mahotella Queens, Whiri Mako Black, Asha Bhosle, Michael Stipe, Grant Lee Phillips, Horace Andy, Revetti Saklar (vocals); Michael Franti (spoken vocals); Robbie Williams (guitar). The global village shrinks down to a single neighborhood in this ambitious project. Rhythm is the road that runs through it all, drawing residents from most of the corners of the world; odd, though, that with legions gathered from India, Africa, New Zealand, Europe, and the U.S., no one from South or Latin America, or from any Native American cultures, joined the party. Even so, producers Duncan Bridgeman and Jamie Catto accomplish a miracle of sorts by traveling to far-flung places and recording dozens of singers and musicians. Each artist contributes parts to one or another song, which are subsequently arranged into often-dazzling pastiches on frameworks of sensuous rhythm. The results are quite extraordinary: On "The Way You Dream" Michael Stipe's vocal floats into a flurry of jungle beats, which are animated by furious hand-drumming and sweetened by New Zealand flute (putorino) and Mandinka harp (kora). These elements melt together in total harmony, as if these disparate musicians had grown up playing together. 1 Giant Leap surprises constantly in this way, yet Bridgeman and Catto are apparently trying to make a point beyond music. The fact that the recipe for the human organism (70 percent water, 18 percent carbon, five percent nitrogen, two percent ...

Pyramid In Your Backyard
Praful Pyramid In Your Backyard CD  (2005)

Upland Breakdown
CD $10.95  Audio Samples
To some electronica enthusiasts, it might seem like a contraction to describe Praful as a saxophonist who has some relevance to electronica. If electronica is all about synthesizers, drum machines, sequencers, samplers, and the like, how can a saxman possibly have any relevance to electronica? Isn't "saxophone electronica" sort of like kosher pork or vegetarian sausage? But electronica doesn't have to be 100 percent electronic -- it can involve a combination of electronic programming and real instruments (and often does). Besides, Praful never claimed to be an electronica purist -- actually, it is difficult to say exactly how Pyramid in Your Backyard should be categorized. It's probably best to describe this 2005 release as a hybrid mixture of electronic club/dance grooves (including trip-hop, chillout, and ambient), pop-jazz, and world music. Of course, world music is a very broad, far-reaching term -- and on Pyramid in Your Backyard, it means everything from Indian, Arabic, and Middle Eastern music to Brazilian samba. This is a largely instrumental CD, but if Praful (who plays guitar, keyboards, ...

Screaming Trees Ocean Of Confusion CD  (2005) (Import) Germany

Upland Breakdown
CD $14.45
Former frontman Mark Lanegan (now of Oueens Of The Stone Age fame) chose 19 of the best tracks from alt-rockers Screaming Trees for the collection, OCEAN OF CONFUSION. This CD includes two unreleased cuts, "Watchpocket Blues" and "Paperback Bible." Screaming Trees are often incorrectly lumped in with Seattle's countless 1990s grunge bands. While they shared a club scene and a love of classic rock with those groups, the ...
