(13 Customer Reviews)
Hard rock quartet formed by Philip Lynott out of Dublin, Ireland. Thin Lizzy had numerous charting albums throughout the 70's & 80's. Black Rose was originally released in 1980. Featured guitarists are Gary Moore & Scott Gorham. 8 tracks. 2001 reissue.
Thin Lizzy: Phil Lynott (vocals, 12-string guitar, bass); Gary Moore, Scott Gorham (guitar); Brian Downey (drums). Additional personnel includes: Bluesy Hughie (harp); Jimmy Bain (bass). Producers include: Tony Visconti, Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott. Recorded at Pathe Marconi Studios, Paris, France and Good Earth Studios, London, England. Black Rose: A Rock Legend would prove to be Thin Lizzy's last true classic album (and last produced by Tony Visconti). Guitarist Brian Robertson was replaced by Gary Moore prior to the album's recording. Moore had already been a member of the band in the early '70s and served as a tour fill-in for Robertson in 1977, and he fits in perfectly with Lizzy's heavy, dual-guitar attack. Black Rose also turned out to be the band's most musically varied, accomplished, and successful studio album, reaching number two on the U.K. album chart upon release. Lizzy leader Phil Lynott is again equipped with a fine set of originals, which the rest of the band shines on -- the percussion-driven opener "Do Anything You Want To," the pop hit "Waiting for an Alibi," and a gentle song for Lynott's newly born daughter, "Sarah." Not all the material is as upbeat, such as the funky "S&M," as well two grim tales of street life and substance abuse -- "Toughest Street in Town" and "Got to Give It Up" (the latter sadly prophetic for Lynott). Black Rose closes with the epic seven-minute title track, which includes an amazing, complex guitar solo by Moore that incorporates Celtic themes against a hard rock accompaniment. Black Rose: A Rock Legend is one of the '70s lost rock classics. ~ Greg Prato

Another Great Lizzy Guitarist Shines It's funny; throughout their career, this band had two of the best dualing guitarist on the planet. AND, to top it off, every time one of em' left, he was replaced with a great world class player. Can you name/imagine one band in the "nu-metal" scene even dreaming of this? Gary Moore, prior to his dramatic solo career, played on a couple Lizzy lps. This one may be his best. More rock then his usual blues, he soars to new heights only dreamed of by other so-called "guitar gods." The most amazing thing: even with guitarist coming and going, Thin Lizzy always delivered the goods and never lost their signature sound. God bless Phil Lynott. Incredible Wow. This is an absolutely amazing album. I just finished listening to the copy I ordered from here, and this is possibly the best album I've ever heard. Every single song is fantastic. Words cannot describe how good the final song, "Roisin Dubh", is. I highly recommend this album to anyone -- even those who have not heard of Thin Lizzy. Awesome rock album One of the best rock/rock ballad albums out there...TL never disappointed me. "Got to give it up" is worth the entire album! A MUST! Submitted by dragster (Sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
LAST GREAT ALBUM with Brian Robertson leaving it was Gary Moore who would come in to fill the lead guitar void most admirably.Lyrically this is also one of the better efforts from Phil and Scott and Co. This also has drummer Brian Downey more active and playing with more verve than some earlier recordings. Tony Visconti does an admirable job putting it all together in the producer's sound room.It would have been nice to see this same lineup and producer on future releases but at least we have this gem from 1979. The Black Rose history from irish lore is a nice touch to round out the disc. MY SARAH was written for Phil's newborn child at the time. Submitted by COBRAFUNK (EDMOND, OK) Was This Review Helpful? Purchase Black Rose CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Thin Lizzy Johnny The Fox CD (1976)
Black Rose
$6.65 Jailbreak was such a peak that it was inevitable that its follow-up would fall short in some fashion and Johnny the Fox, delivered the same year as its predecessor, did indeed pale in comparison. What's interesting about Johnny the Fox is that it's interesting, hardly a rote repetition of Jailbreak but instead an odd, fitfully successful evolution forward. ...
| | Thin Lizzy Bad Reputation CD (1977)
Black Rose
$6.55 Thin Lizzy: Phil Lynott (vocals, bass); Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham (guitar); Brian Downey (drums). If Thin Lizzy got a bit too grand and florid on Johnny the Fox, they quickly corrected themselves on its 1977 follow-up, Bad Reputation. Teaming up with the legendary producer Tony Visconti, Thin Lizzy managed to pull of a nifty trick of sounding leaner, tougher than they did ...

| | Jimi Hendrix Band Of Gypsys CD (1970) Remastered
Black Rose
$11.15 Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar); Billy Cox (bass instrument); Buddy Miles (drums, background vocals). Liner Note Author: John McDermott. Band of Gypsys was the only live recording authorized by Jimi Hendrix before his death. It was recorded and released in order to get Hendrix out from under a contractual obligation that had been hanging over his head for a couple years. Helping him out were longtime friends Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on the drums because the Experience had broken up in June of 1969, following a show in Denver. This rhythm section was vastly different from the Experience. Buddy Miles was an earthy, funky drummer in direct contrast to the busy, jazzy leanings of Mitch Mitchell. Noel Redding was not really a bass player at all but a converted guitar player who was hired in large part because Hendrix liked his hair! These new surroundings pushed Hendrix to new creative heights. Along with this new rhythm section, Hendrix took these shows as an opportunity to showcase much of the new material he had been working on. The music was a seamless melding of rock, funk, and R&B, and tunes like "Message to Love" and "Power to Love" showed a new lyrical direction as well. Although he could be an erratic live performer, for these shows, Hendrix was on -- perhaps his finest performances. His playing was focused and precise. In fact, for most of the set, Hendrix stood motionless, a far cry from the stage antics that helped establish his reputation as a performer. Equipment problems had plagued him in past live shows as well, but everything was perfect for the Fillmore shows. His absolute mastery of his guitar and effects is even more amazing considering that this was the first time he used the Fuzz Face, wah-wah pedal, Univibe, and Octavia pedals on-stage together. The guitar tones he gets on "Who Knows" and "Power to Love" are powerful and intense, but nowhere is his absolute control more evident than on "Machine Gun," where Hendrix conjures bombs, guns, and other sounds of war from his guitar, all within the context of a coherent musical statement. The solo on "Machine Gun" totally rewrote the book on what a man could do with an electric guitar and is arguably the most groundbreaking and devastating guitar solo ever. These live versions of "Message to Love" and "Power to Love" are far better than the jigsaw puzzle studio versions that were released ...
| | De La Soul De La Mix Tape: Remixes, Rarities & Classics CD (2004) Remastered
Black Rose
$7.51 De La Soul: Posdnous, Trugoy, Pasemaster Mase (rap vocals). Personnel: Mos Def, Truth Enola, Yankee B. (vocals); Pic Conley (flute). Additional personnel: Mos Def, Prince Paul, Busta Rhymes (rap vocals); DJ Honda, Da Beatminerz (programming). Audio Mixers: De La Soul; Prince Paul; Chris Conway; Sue Faber; Tim Latham; Troy Hightower; Bob Power. Audio Remasterers: Dan Hersch; Steve Pokorny. Audio Remixers: Jay Dee; De La Soul; DJ Spinna; DJ Joc Max; Badmarsh & Shri. Liner Note Author: Chairman Mao. Arrangers: De La Soul; Prince Paul. The best thing about De La Mix Tape: Remixes, Rarities and Classics is that it's easy access to some rare B-sides, appearances on other artists' albums, and promo tracks. Unfortunately, it's not all of them, but the big find is the instrumental B-side "Piles and Piles of Demo Tapes Bi-Da Miles," with its rock-solid groove and crazy flute solo. The rest of the so-so rare tracks are upstaged by the group's appearances with other artists, including the great "More Than U Know" from Prince Paul's A Prince Among Thieves. A couple hits are included in their unaltered album versions. ~ David Jeffries If this was a "mixtape" like the cover says, it would be a lot more fun. De La Soul's colorful sound would have been perfect in the hands of a quirky and smart DJ (old friend Prince Paul perhaps), and what if the quirky trio actually hosted it? The tracks on De La Mix Tape: Remixes, Rarities and Classics aren't mixed together. Even the way they're sequenced on the disc doesn't make sense, although the folks at Rhino mercifully spared listeners the chore of listening to the two (one too many) remixes of "Stakes Is High" in order. At the very least, you do get easy access to some rare B-sides, appearances on other artists' albums, and promo tracks, but not all of them. The big find is the instrumental B-side "Piles and Piles of Demo Tapes Bi-Da Miles," with its rock-solid groove and crazy flute solo. | | Mike & Ruthy Waltz Of The Chickadee CD (2009)
Black Rose
$18.95 Mike and Ruthy are a couple whose love was forged in New York City amidst a swirl of rock, anti-folk, and Americana enthusiasm. They harmonized from the first night they met, bringing smiles to their friends faces with original songs and layering raspy fiddle over pop-strummed guitar. It was 1999, and their band, Rhinegold, played to pre-trucker-hat hipsters in the East Village and then gathered to play more songs around the cluttered coffeetable at someones apartment. Richard Buckner played low on the small bedside stereo as these young, nocturnal band-mates got some early morning sleep. It is true that Mike was originally recruited by his college to play hockey and Ruth had gone to school for acting, but now they began a new path together, crafting songs and recordings and touring the world. Ten years later, Mike and Ruthy are married and living upstate with their new son, William Puck. With 7 years of touring under their belts with ...
