| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CDs (2009) Deluxe Edition
Next World CD music
$16.24 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock ...

Next World CD music
$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, ...

| | Gifthorse Excess, Lies And Heather's Arrest CD (1998)
Next World songs
$9.85 Prompting comparisons to rootsy alternative stars Cracker and various '70s rockers, Gifthorse's debut, Excess, Lies and Heather's Arrest, made a modest critical splash. Released in 1999 at just about the high point of alternative pointlessness, Gifthorse offered a minimal take on modern rock that recalled some of the original indie stars who ignited the genre. Tracks like "Excess" and "Heather's Arrest" garnered a modicum of college and modern rock airplay, but this Pinch Hit Records release never had a chance at taking off commercially, what with the major-label lockout of big-market radio and MTV. Gifthorse gave it their best shot, though, and on this debut they prove themselves to be more than capable in the songwriting and performance categories. A bit of an alternative find, music fans will do well to go ahead and snag a copy of Excess, Lies and Heather's Arrest if they're lucky enough to stumble upon it in the bargain racks at their local record store. ~ Vincent Jeffries
CONTAINS CONTENT DAMAGING TO YOUR MINDLESSNESSThe debut GiftHorse CD, Excess, Lies and Heather's Arrest, should bare this consumer warning label. The band comes on with a crunch, swagger and an air of decadence. " We'll probably be outside having a smoke and not hear them call our name when our 15 seconds comes" says streetwise lead singer Bret Levick.GiftHorse is Bret Levick (Lead vocals, guitars), Sven Spieker (Guitars, BG vocals), Berry Oakley Jr. (Bass, BG vocals) and Chris Razze (Drums). GiftHorse's songs fall somewhere between David Bowie and Tom Petty with Levick's deadly lyrics elevated by the penetrating guitar work of cohort Sven Spieker. The album's songs are filled with jaded characters that seem suitable for a Tarantino flick. Levick's lyrics are biting and sarcastic but never self-righteous. Excess, Lies and Heather's Arrest, viewed as a collection of songs, exists between the light of optimism and the shadow of degeneration. Levick's "not so sane" days get little autobiographical attention but come to the surface on tracks like Shoot Shoot and the hilariously depraved depiction of a junkie girlfriend ...
| | Rob Seals Revolution Of One CD (2000)
Next World album
$16.49 Singer/songwriter Rob Seals enlists some high-profile musical guests for his debut solo release.Guests include members of Vertical Horizon, Bruce Hornsby's band, and Evan Olson's band. Groove-driven guitars provide the framework for heady lyrical concerns in eleven songs on this CD. The record features "Generation Why," an exploration of generational identity in the wake of a rock star's suicide. The song won BMI's Mid-Atlantic Song Contest for Best Progressive/Alternative Song."Well-crafted, expert, radio friendly, smart pop! [it has] Paul Simon's clever musical conversationality downpat." - (ESP Magazine)Awarded 2001 Male Singer/Songwriter ALBUM OF THE YEAR by Just Plain Folks among its 13,000 members internationally. The most recent published review, fall 2001, in IndieMonkey by UK freelance writer Andrew Ellis:It is perhaps entirely appropriate that Rob Seals' press biography not only lists his notable achievements as an independent musician, but also details his career as an English teacher. Because on 'A Revolution of One', Seals demonstrates that music and education are strongly bound together. Most of Seals' superbly written, performed and produced songs deal with personal and collective lessons learned, intertwining thought-provoking, intelligent lyrics with a strong sense of melody, and the fact that various members of Vertical Horizon and Evan Olson's band help out on numerous tracks speaks volumes about his talent. The title track is one such song to benefit from the contributions of Vertical Horizon's Ed Toth and demonstrates ...

| | Yousaidsaturday CD (2006)
Next World music CDs
$13.29 Occasionally, one encounters an American band that is so British-influenced that the listener assumes the band is from somewhere in the U.K.; You Said Saturday is such a band. If a Brit-pop enthusiast listened to this self-titled release without knowing anything about the group's history, he/she would likely be wondering what part of England You Said Saturday comes from -- are we talking Southern England as in London, or Northern England as in Manchester, Liverpool, or Newcastle? Or perhaps somewhere in Wales? Maybe Cardiff? But no, You Said Saturday is from the San Francisco Bay Area; they are definitely American even though this 32-minute disc is very much in the Brit-pop vein. Their mellow approach to alternative pop/rock owes a lot to Coldplay and Travis as well as the ever-influential Beatles, who have been a major inspiration to England's Coldplay and Scotland's Travis (a Glasgow unit with a very British-influenced sound) despite the fact that they broke up many years before either Coldplay or Travis was formed. If one has spent a lot of time savoring Travis' U.K. smash "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?," it is very easy to get into "Orbit," "Safe and Sound," and other melancholy items on this 2006 release. You Said Saturday aren't the least bit groundbreaking -- actually, they're quite derivative -- but the Northern Californians' accessible, highly melodic songs are still enjoyable and well crafted. Although not an essential purchase, this decent, if brief, effort is worth hearing if one is heavily into the Coldplay/Travis school of Beatles-minded alternative pop/rock. ~ Alex Henderson
