This version of the Prodigy album EXPERIENCE includes a bonus disc of remixes and B-sides.
This vinly reissue of The Prodigy's first LP transports you back to a time in the early '90s when it seemed as if rave and electronic dance music might obliterate guitar-based rock from the charts for good. That swaggering, aggressive confidence still permeates EXPERIENCE's 12 tracks. FAT OF THE LAND, which unfurled hits like "Firestarter" and "Breathe" on a ready public, made Liam Howlett's project a household name, but it was 1992's EXPERIENCE that laid the groundwork for The Prodigy's scabrous mixture of hardcore beats and punk melody. Opener "Jericho"'s sampled cry to "keep on dancin'" sets a tone that persists throughout the album. While that and tracks like "Wind it Up" are fairly straightforward hardcore rave invectives, sneakier songs like "Out of Space" (with its Max Romeo samples and "Guns of Brixton"-like boing-boing sounds), and "Weather Experience," prove more expansive. It's easy to hear why EXPERIENCE remains one of the primary documents of a time, place, and sound.
This two-disc expanded reissue of The Prodigy's first LP transports you back to a time in the early '90s when it seemed as if rave and electronic dance music might obliterate guitar-based rock from the charts for good. That swaggering, aggressive confidence still permeates EXPERIENCE's 12 tracks, as well as the 11 tracks of remixes and rarities that make up the second disc. FAT OF THE LAND, which unfurled hits like "Firestarter" and "Breathe" on a more-than-ready consumer public, made Liam Howlett's project a household name, but it was 1992's EXPERIENCE that first laid the groundwork for The Prodigy's scabrous mixture of hardcore beats and punk melody. Opener "Jericho"'s sampled cry to "keep on dancin'" sets a tone that persists throughout the album. One of the few noncompilation rave albums of any worth, Experience balances a supply of top-this siren whistles and chipmunk divas with Liam Howlett's surprising flair for constructing track after track of intense breakbeat techno. Almost every song sounds like a potential chart-topper (circa 1992, of course) while the true singles "Your Love," "Charly," "Music Reach," and "Out of Space" add that extra bit of energy to the fray. More than just a relic of the rave experience, Experience shows the Prodigy near the peak of their game from the get-go. [An expanded edition doubled the runtime of the original, offering copious remixes only included previously on CD-5 or 12".] ~ John Bush

Experience album
$9.59 FAT OF THE LAND was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Rock Album.
Among the most anticipated releases of 1997, The Prodigy's third full-length album is a bulldozing rock-techno hybrid. But while the guitar/samples/hyper-beats mosaic that made "Firestarter" an MTV breakout are found in every nook and cranny of this album, the overall building blocks are far more diverse, making it a tangible melting pot of pre-millennium pop styles.
There's a definite hip-hop element here. "Diesel Power," which features quality mic control by Kool Keith (of Ultramagnetic MCs and Dr. Octagon fame), is new-style hip-hop sculpture, applying techno and acid-house textures to apocalyptic ends. Both "Funky Shit" and "Smack My Bitch Up" are throbbing dance-floor ejaculations wrapped around, respectively, Beastie Boys and De La Soul refrains. Kula Shaker's Crispin Mills adds vocals to an Eastern-influenced trance workout called "Narayan." All this adds up to proof positive that THE FAT OF THE LAND is just the tip of the iceberg.
Personnel: Crispian Mills, Keith Flint, Shahin Bada, Kool Keith, Maxim, Saffron (vocals); Jim Davies (guitar).
Audio Mixer: Liam Howlett.

| | Prodigy Music For The Jilted Generation CD (1995)
Experience CD music
$9.75 The band who stand to give the much maligned English county of Essex a 'good' reputation, Prodigy succeed where Ian Dury and Brian Poole And The Tremeloes failed, i.e., achieving worldwide acceptance and success. Their aggressive, original and extraordinarily exciting style of dance music has created a thousand imitators. Although this record has since been overshadowed by the international ...
| | Ping Pong Club - Vols. 6-7: Rots In Hell DVD (1995)
Experience music CDs
$20.24 The Ping Pong Club, a group of adolescent misfits who make Beavis and Butthead look pretty smart, is consistently getting itself into trouble for its members' uncontrollable behavior, lack of skill at their chosen sport, and disregard for personal hygiene. Filled to the brim with scatological humor, juvenile antics, and hormonally induced pranks, THE PING PONG CLUB is certainly not for those who are easily offended. In these episodes, the club is disbanded by their school's new principal, a man who's quite possibly weirder than any grownup the club has ...
| | Waterbone Tibet CD (1998)
Experience songs
$13.29 This is an interesting mix of electronic dance music fused with various traditional song forms from Tibet (with a bit from Nepal and Thailand, as well). Waterbone is actually a pair of American artists, Kendall Jones and Jimmy Waldo, who simply composed bits and pieces of song motifs before traveling to the Himalayas to record the bulk of the album's material. A few of the pieces are pre-composed works for synthesizers, drum machines, and flutes, but the majority is a synthesis of synthesizer and drum loops with recordings of the native musicians. While the performers from the various schools, temples, and street corners are all enjoyable, the excitement here comes from the fusion between the old vocal and modern technological music forms. The vocalists range from young female singers of Bangkok to ancient monks of Katmandu. The seamless transitions from one to another and the delicate fusion with electronica make the album worth hearing. Mixing Asian vocals with electronica is hardly anything new (especially since the success of Enigma's "Return to Innocence"), with notable albums in the vein coming from any number of Asian dub groups, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and a lump of single singers enhancing their own abilities from throughout the continent. Any of these can compete with this Waterbone album, and, musically, many might outdo it, as Tibet stays relatively conventional in its ways as far as electronica goes. Give it a listen as a solid album, but look elsewhere for the groundbreaking sounds. ~ Adam Greenberg

| | Prodigy Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned CD (2004)
Experience album
$15.79 In addition to its superior, high-end production, fist-pumping choruses, and insidiously propulsive rhythms (the undulating bass groove of "Hot Ride"--its refrain filched from Jimmy Webb's "Up, Up and Away"--is one of the highlights), ALWAYS OUTNUMBERED is graced by distinguished guests. Twista (reputedly one of the fastest rappers on earth) spits rhymes throughout "Get Up Get Off" at a mind-boggling pace. Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher takes a turn on the mic on "Shoot Down," and Kool Keith turns up on the aggro-electro-funk of "Wake Up Call." But it is Howlett's knob-twiddling that commands most of the attention here, sustaining the Prodigy's long-held claim to making some of the most meticulously constructed, brain-rattling club music around.
After a seven-year break between studio albums, 2004's ALWAYS OUTNUMERED, NEVER OUTGUNNED returned the Prodigy to the ranks of the movers and shakers in mainstream electronica. From the record's lead-off track, "Spitfire," it is clear that group mastermind Liam Howlett (now essentially a one-man band) hasn't lost his touch--thunderous beats abet aggressive guitar, keyboards, and samples, while snaking melodies rise and fall, ...

Experience album
$11.49 Following in the tradition of the mega-selling JOCK JAMS series, ESPN PRESENTS STADIUM ANTHEMS is an adrenaline-pumping collection of songs often played at professional sporting events. Stylistically, the tracks here have little connection other than the fact that they all make a great soundtrack for watching big guys with seven-figure salaries perform feats of strength. That said, this compilation is a fascinating study in the way large-scale sporting events offer the kind communal atmosphere that allows one to enjoy everything from British glam rock (Gary Glitter's evergreen "Rock & Roll, Part 2") to Bahamian hip-pop (the ubiquitous "Who Let the Dogs Out" by the Baha Men) and accessible electronica (Moby's "Body Rock"). In addition, the disc is simply a well-assembled collection of fun pop music that, along with a keg of beer, some hotdogs, and ...
| | Dance To The Potshot Record CD (2004)
Experience CD music
$10.85 Label reps invite you, when listening to Potshot's fifth Asian Man album, to "imagine Screeching Weasel and the Specials doing a tango." Granted, it's a mental image that will help keep your mind off the band's hilariously atrocious English (sample couplet: "Many sad and tuff happened/It was very happy times"), but a more apt stylistic comparison might be the Mighty Mighty Bosstones with Eek-A-Mouse guesting on lead vocals. Great horn arrangements, solid punk-ska guitars, indelible melodic hooks, and a cute (if ultimately irritating) hiccupy vocal style combine to make Dance to the Potshot Record a great summertime party album. Awful as the lyrics are, they never intrude on your musical enjoyment because singer Ryoji is so completely incomprehensible; what matters on songs like "In Time Now" and "Victory or Lost" are the buzzsaw guitars and the cathartic horn lines, and the band's infectious, jubilant energy. Recommended. (Dance to the Potshot ...
